During the final two decades of his life, Beliveau battled numerous health issues, including cardiac-related issues in 1996, as well as a cancerous tumor discovered in his neck in 2000. That goes with the kind of salary athletes are being paid nowadays. Hard to be humble when you're getting that kind of cash in your early 20's or late teens. When my father was dying of lung cancer, my younger brother, whom like my dad is a huge Habs fan, sent a letter to the Canadiens organization requesting words of encouragement. Within a week, he received a letter for my dad, it was a hand written letter by Jean Beliveau wishing him the best, and thanking him for his many years of fandom. I will never forget the look on my dad's face after reading that letter. It truly brought him joy in a very difficult time. R.I.P.
