In keeping with the non political/political theme:

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt"-- Abraham Lincoln

I haven't watched the interview, but is there any possibility he misunderstood who the reporter was asking about? They said Magic Johnson was there, as were other athletes.

I don't think it's that incredibly heinous for a guy his age to not know who Nelson Mandela was, but that he would make up a story like he did. Kind of like Mitch Albom.

The reporter said, Nelson Mandela one of the most historical and influential figures of the 20the century what knowledge or awareness did you have of him growing up.

Don't know how to misinterpret that.

Guys, I think we're missing the bigger picture.

The point is not that Bernier is an uneducated, dumb jock idiot poop head--

It's that he's

NOT A SPECIALS FAN

*gasps*

I kind of like this 1000 times. Though on balance I prefer 'Ghost Town'- used to have that one on cassette...

On topic...at least we can take comfort in the fact that thanks to you-tube his spectacular ignorance will haunt him for the rest of his life. Which is always fun when looking at the leafs...

On the broader topic...I would advice anyone who castigates Mandela for his political approach should A - contextualise it a little more & B - acknowledge that someone who manages to pretty much single-handedly inspire a nation to avoid a blood bath of perpetual civil war and reprisal and embody the the cause of reconciliation in a manner almost unheard of across Africa despite his life experiences up to that point giving a lot more prompting for damoclesian vengeance can probably be forgiven for acts of non-fatal property based terrorism against a state that routinely murdered large portions of its own people that happened 35 years previously. De Clerc deserves huge credit too.

The only thing I can say is the normal thing for someone in this scenario is to keep it as vague as possible....not make up stories about the man

"Mandela? Aw, man. We used to shotgun PBR back behind the abandoned factory in juniors after sneaking out of billet. That guy was the meanest drunk I ever met! Sure had a way with the ladies though..."
