The Ottawa Senators have fired head coach Paul MacLean.

The club confirmed the move Monday morning via Twitter.

Ottawa has posted an 11-11-5 record through 27 games thus far in 2013-14, putting them seventh in the Atlantic Division and 10th in the Eastern Conference standings.

Weird.

Are the Sens delusional about what kind of team they have? They have a sub-500 record (counting SO loses). IMO, that's exactly where they should be, give or take.

I don't know if there's any coach that's available that could do more with that team.

Regardless, unless they hire Lanny MacDonald, fan dude there behind the bench/glass is going to have to shave now.

Wow that was quick but to be honest what is Ottawa expecting ? Their payroll is one of the lowest in the whole league, their best defender is playing like a fourth forward Melynk won't spend to the cap tough situation to be in.

That being said MacLean didn't seem to have the right system for this club.

Exactly. They've got an average team (at best). How is that the coach's fault? They've got like 4 players who aren't completely outclassed in every single game they play.

This blog post sums up my thoughts.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/paul-maclean-fired-by-ottawa-senators-for-things-that-aren-t-his-fault-182113204.html?soc_src=mediacontentstory&soc_trk=tw

Greg Wyshynski is a great writer.

In the “coaching vs. construction” debate over a team’s lack of success, this is about construction. This isn’t to say Bryan Murray has done a poor job, but it’s like asking an accomplished chef to create a four-star meal with some quarters for the vending machine. And as anyone that’s seen that Quickfire Challenge on “Top Chef” knows, that ain’t easy.

Nah... If the Oilers are going to make a coaching change it will be in the off season. They'll let Eakins tank with the team.

Agreed. The last thing the Oilers want is to start winning right now. Eakins will be their fall guy right after they draft McDavid.

He'll rebound somewhere for sure. Maybe in San Jose when MacT gets canned.

I would almost say that Dallas Eakins just felt someone walk on his grave, but would MacLean want to go from a poorly constructed team in Ottawa to the absolute ****show they have in Edmonton? Sit at home the rest of the season & go to Toronto in the off season when they fail to land Babs.

This team showed promise a few years ago when they beat up Montreal in the playoffs.

Too bad they didn't reacquire Brian McGrattan. They would have punched their way to a Stanley Cup championship by now, am I right?

They have plenty of tough guys, actually.

McGrattan does make everyone around him better, though. Imagine how physical and aggressive Franzen would play with that beast in the lineup.

No doubt. He'd make Johan Franzen into Mark Messier. Such is the power of McGrattan.

Better than your boy, Colton "I can't get out of the minors" Orr.

My boy? I have a long and very explicit hatred of fighting in hockey. That's well established around here. You're the one who loves fighting, but can't face up to the fact that Colton Orr consistently mashed McGrattan's face whenever they fought. Which is precisely why I bring it up.

I have a hard time figuring why you enjoy fighting so much, but then idolize the second best fighter of his era. It's a little bit like if Scottie Pippen was your favorite Chicago Bull in the 90's.
