Maybe he would have with more time? 18 games in the ahl isn't enough time to say someone's a bust and even though he wasn't producing offensively I wouldn't say being -3 was awful for a rookie

Almquist is another guy we lost cause he got fed up of waiting even though he stayed in the ahl for years( for all we know maybe backman saw that along with the healthy scratches and figured wasn't worth it?)

Not saying almquist is a star but if guys like yannick weber and Raphael diaz are still in the nhl I'm sure almquist could of gotten a spot somewhere

Almquist is in Sweden because he's too small and isn't fast enough to make up for it, and is therefore a defensive liability. Weber and Diaz are considerably heavier and stronger.

If Backman needed more time to prove himself, he should have stuck it out instead of running home when things were tough. In order to play in the NHL, you need skill and mental toughness. Backman's actions show that he doesn't have the mentality to make it right now.

If you willing leave the Wings - the freaking Detroit Red Wings - for Europe, good riddance. We can argue all day about what time he should have got and what management should have done, but at the end of the day there are two types of players. Guys who will jump ship when things get bad for them, and guys who will grit their teeth and work that much harder to get to the top. Unfortunately, deserved or not, Backman was the former. I'd rather have the Tatars and Nyquists, who put their noses to the grind stone and fought for their spots than the Backmans of the world. Goodluck to him in Sweden.

Datsyuk came here at 24 and got no ahl time , same with zetterberg ..... Just because he's not willing to stay here to be benched doesn't mean he won't make it to the nhl

I'm sorry but that's crap ... Those 2 guys are what ? 20 pounds heavier than almquist? There all like the same height ... With that logic why did we even give 5'8 joe hicketts a contract ?

If weber and diaz could make it in the nhl I'm sure almquist could of gotten some playing time if he wasn't drafted by the redwings

Backman is still 22 , he probably won't make it in the nhl with the redwings but he's still talented and can make it on another team like jarnkrok did

hicketts already weighs 180 pounds and he got over 190 at one point which shows putting on weight isn't a problem with him.

Are you really comparing Backman to Zetterberg and Datsyuk?

20 pounds is a lot of muscle. Hicketts is a depth signing for a future AHL plug, not because he has a good shot of being an NHL player. Backman can make it if he gets stronger and decides that he wants to put in the effort of winning a spot. Otherwise an NHL doesn't need a guy who's going to say "this is too hard, I don't want to get better and win that much."

Oh, c'mon. You're smarter than this,

What is my statement is wrong? He had a rough start to the season and hasn't earned ice time, his response was to go home instead of sticking it out and proving he's as good as he thinks he is.

I don't get why people are saying that Backman doesn't want to put in the work. From everything I've heard and read, he has been putting in the work on and off the ice, he just isn't putting up the points he was expected to. He was one of the best defenseman on the entire Griffins team, in last years playoffs. Coming in to training camp everyone, including Babcock had high hopes for him. He didn't exceed expectations in camp but I don't think he was really a disappointment either. He had a slow start with the Griffins this year, but not one of the games I've watched, did he look out of place, certainly not to warrant a scratch over Brennan Evans.

Can you really blame the guy for getting frustrated? He was one of the top defenders in a much better league for the past year or two, now all of a sudden he is being scratched for guys that are completely inferior in skill set, who also have no future in the NHL. There is no question that the SHL is a better league than the AHL, and maybe he has every intention to go there where he will get the big minutes, and then come back in a year or two to earn a spot on the Red Wings roster or another NHL team.

Like I've said before, I do feel that Backman has the potential to be an NHL defenseman, but none of us know exactly what really happened there. However, I do wish he were still down in GR over Evans. But then, I also wish Ouellet were up with Detroit over Kindl too... Oh well, we'll have to wait and see how this one pans out...

Well we still own him, so I doubt he's going elsewhere unless we trade him. Problem with playing in the SHL is he's not getting accustomed to NA ice and the NA game, which he already admitted was a bit of an adjustment for him. Going to the SHL essentially is a huge setback for his possible NHL career. Even with the better minutes.

I wonder what the policy of lower body strength training is over there.

I said multiple times I wasn't comparing backman to zetterberg and datsyuk ... They both didn't put in any ahl work as well though and datsyuk started his nhl career at 24

Hicketts can add 20 pounds of muscle but he's still 5'8 and will get knocked around by bigger guys

Don't think backman actually thought it was too had , in fact he actually said he believed it was a harder league in Sweden (whether he really believe that is another thing) I don't think he thought it was too hard , just thought if I'm not in the nhl and I'm not playing as much as I'd like in Grand Rapids I might as well go back to my country and family

That's something none of us can understand ... Can't be an easy decision to leave behind everything you've ever known and everyone ... It's easy though to say that someone's a bum and sucks cause he's not willing to sit on his behind

I don't know how easy it'll be to knock him around.

190 solid pounds on a frame that low, center of gravity that far down....

Well Bäckman has signed for Linköping HC now for the rest of the season. I wonder what this means for us, will he be available for the ahl playoffs if he should have a really great season and we'd want him to come over again?

Ya I'm sure he'll have a great time trying to knock those 6'3 guys in front of our net

Guessing he can come but after being benched now I'm sure he won't come back
