Where were team-mates on the Smith headshot

Here's a comparison I'm sure the two of you will no doubt understand completely. Watching hockey for the fights is a lot like watching NASCAR for the crashes. It's too bad The Joe doesn't have an infield full of underage girls in halter tops, that way the two of you could go hog wild the next time Brendan Smith oozes machismo after a crosscheck.

Where did either of us say we watch a hockey game for just the fights? Boy you sure are trying your hardest aren't you and you are calling us pedophiles...You sure get all worked up when someone doesn't agree with you.

1. The Wings DO get after people for dirty hits. Not every single time but E went after Nolan and in previous seasons Bertuzzi stuck up for Pav. It's not always about fighting, there are guys who make their presence known after questionable hits.

2. I know moderation has been a touchy subject lately but I've noticed the number of personal attacks has gone way up in the past few weeks and honestly, it doesn't bring much to the discussion at all.

I agree it will be difficult to eliminate fighting from the game, otherwise it would have been done already. The thing that bothers me is that fighting is still often perceived as the only solution to the problem of cheap shots. As kip pointed out, there is virtually no fighting in the playoffs and it's the fastest, hardest hitting, engaging hockey to watch!

Even if fighting did reduce cheap shots (if it does its marginal, cheap shots were the norm in fighting's hey day) it doesn't mean we have to stop trying to find a better solution that doesn't involve punching someone in the face. I mean say that out loud and listen to how ridiculous it sounds.

What's your solution? Shanahan's suspensions didn't seem to work as much as desired. And cheap hits in the playoffs have resulted in fighting. The Ottawa vs. Montreal series a few years ago turned into a fight fest due to a cheapshot. The 2012 playoffs had a ton of brawls and skirmishes in the first round.

Historically, though, there's never been as much fighting in the playoffs as the regular season. Even in the 80's or early 90's.

Don't quote me or anything but from what I remember the cheap hits and the reasons to even fight go down as well in the playoffs......maybe i'm wrong on that...

Yes, I do. Your razor sharp arguments cut me to the core.

Probably. There's more at stake and each game becomes more important. I think there's less individual fights in the playoffs than there are skirmishes and occasional line brawls, though. Just seems that way.

Kip let it go buddy. I'm not going to sit here and come up with a dissertation on why I believe fights should be a part of hockey. It's hockey for pete sake. Entertainment. I like the fighting...I like the big hits...I like the skill...I like the scoring....I hate Crosby.

And that's the thing that is clear with you. You love the arguments. I have seen someone agree with you and you still pick them apart. Sorry that I don't fulfill your need.

Oh, I get it. You like sports, and you like fighting, and you like entertainment. You like sports entertainment. Gotcha.

Honestly, I don't know that I have a solution, but I also haven't been tasked with it in any official capacity. I believe before fighting can be eliminated the NHL has to assume a stronger position against it, but there are at this time too many fans and consequently too much money, in support of fighting.

So much truculence in this thread.

Nothing wrong with that, it's still a shame that nobody stood up for Smith and adding someone other teams fear is never the worst idea in the world.

Also Johnny Hockey, Monahan and the other Flames youngstars can go outthere and do what they want, because they know a bunch of no nonsense guys are having their back. I disagree with a lot of things that Burke says, but when it comes to truculence, beligerence and pugnacity the guy is right. I'm also not going to say sorry for liking something thats been part of hockey since forever and enjoying a good scrap, hard hit and some rough stuff after all this is hockey and not soccer where so called athletes are acting like ******* if someone touches them ...

f***. I’d take that guy on the Red Wings 4th line. Just look at him. It’s like Game of Thrones meets Olli Jokinen. Can he kill penalties??? Cause if he can..................

He doesn't kill penalties. He just kills other players' confidence by staring at them menacingly from the bench.

Here's why I think this "the refs should have stopped it sooner" argument is bunk. If Smith had been winning the fight, and the refs stopped it sooner, everybody would be irritated that the refs "should have let them go". When you say "usually the refs jump in TOO early" you're suggesting that they're doing something wrong by getting involved before they SHOULD. And now, you're advocating them getting involved before they DID. It's a judgment call for the refs, and when the fight is going well for our boys, people are almost never in favor of stopping the fight.

If Brendan Smith had the sweater pulled over Panik's head and was serving him his lunch, everybody would have been fine with the refs' inaction. They'd have LOVED seeing a Red Wing win a fight for once. But because Riley's Brother was getting handled it's somehow wrong for the refs to stand back and "let em' go".

I don't buy it.

The point I was trying to make was yes they usually jump in so why didn`t they when Smith had a jersey over his face and he could have been seriously hurt as a result? I think I can answer that after watching the replay a few more times. I believe the refs let Smith take a bit of medicine because of the slash he fed Panik which started the fight.

Ya wanna reduce cheap shots?

How about this.....Player 'A' elbows Player 'B' in the head...Player 'B' misses the remainder of the season, and playoffs due to a concussion...Player 'A' is suspended for the same number of games that Player 'B' misses due to injury.....I highly doubt both the NHLPA, and NHL would like this form of punishment - even though it would possibly reduce cheap shots.

Thems fightin wurds.

I think the difficulty will always be determining intent, it's such a fast game and every collision has a tremendous amount of variables to consider. Unless your Neal or Cooke haha. Edited by Mckinley25

If that's Earl Grey, or Chamomile - please set up another place setting for me!

Are you kidding me?! *Chamomile*? IT'S NOT EVEN A REAL TEA!! It's a fricking *herb*. Are you so full of yourself that you can't appreciate a decent green tea? You're probably the type that prefers English Breakfast over Irish Breakfast. I just don't know what to say to you anymore. You're clearly an uncivilized ass.
