12/21 GDT : Avalanche 2 at Red Wings 1 (SO)

I turned the channel as soon as that late call was made.

Normally, I (w)couldn't turn away from the burning car wreck that is the Detroit Red Wings in third period pressure situations.

Tonight I did. Knew where it was going. ...and it did. Frustrating.

Win-less in 6. Only Calgary and Edmonton have longer win-less streaks going.

Say what you will about at least getting a point from these games, but we're clinging to third in the Atlantic with what amounts to a .500 record.

Contender? Need a trade? Lines?

These threads are going to see a lot of action.

The ice was in bad shape and the puck was bouncing, but he definitely had him beat.

And that too, is what she said.

Beat me to it.

Wasn't Jurco known for his shootout moves in juniors? Don't know why it's taken so long for him to get a chance. It's not like we're tearing it up in the shootout

Remember when we won all those games in a row but it wasn't any good because we were giving up too many goals as well? And then we tightened up defensively and started losing a bunch?

Maybe we should go back to doing things wrong and winning again eh?

Of the Wings 17 wins, they only gave up more than 2 goals in 5 of them.

The Wings last streak was three games in a row and they gave up 2, 2, and 1 goal in that run.

Get rid of these "awesome" defensive defensemen we've got and trade for an offensive one.

You know, a guy that'll flip the bird to jeering fans. Fart in microphones during post-game media scrums. ....at least it would be fun and interesting.

On Dec. 2nd, the the middle of our best stretch of hockey all season, Babcock said...

"We're a pretty good hockey club when we play with pace, " Babcock said recently. "When we don't play with pace, we're not. The thing I don't like about what's gone on lately is we're giving up too many goals. We want to get back to giving up no goals...I don't mind if we score goals but I'm not interested in giving them up."

We had won four in a row prior to that night, and three in a row afterward, and seemed to be creating offense pretty consistently. I don't know where that went.

If you think that they've been fine all season that's cool, I don't want to argue with you. But Babs certainly thought they were giving up too many goals. Since that time we've failed to duplicate the offensive output we were seeing then, and we've failed to get a lot of points that we probably ought to have.

I've held off on promoting this in the past, but I think it's now viable to discuss replacing Franzen. Why is viable now...because he is not in our top 3 offensive group anymore. Yes, he has 19 points thus far and an assist machine. However, at a cap hit of $4M...I think his offensive numbers actually make him trade-able at this cap hit.

1. I'd replace him with someone younger who can produce for us for the next five years.

2. He's 34, and a big boy, father time and father injury are not in his favor.

3. The assists are great, but we need goal scorers.

I can't believe we pissed away the easy part of the schedule. Securing a top playoff spot is not looking great now going forward

Think of it as a moral victory. Despite the fact that we didn't win most of the games, the opposing teams hardly scored any goals at all.

Maybe, but in the past we've had more success in the shootout and were still heavily left handed. I mean, Dats, Filppula, Hudler, Bert, Z, Franzen, are all lefties and we were better when they were the regular shooters.

But I'd agree that in general teams would be better if they could mix it up.

Anybody think our lack of right handed shooters are CONTRIBUTING to our losses in shootoutsSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think it has more to do with not having an enforcer. Opposing teams might think twice about dangling on Howard if Punchy McGrattan was staring them down.

Could you imagine if McGrattan and Babcock BOTH were on the bench mean mugging the shooter? They'd pull a Patrick Eaves and tumble to the ice in fear before getting a shot off.

What if Babcock and Mcgrattan stared at each other? There'd be a dimensional paradox. Time would stop as the world rips itself apart at an atomic level eventually imploding in on itself forming a super dense mega black hole.

And that's why Mcgrattan can never play for us.

I think lack of righties has to do with poor play and lack of goals.

Depending in where the play is at you can't have a one timer with only lefties. It also can hurt the defense to play on your off hand in certain situations.
