I'm not sure if he actually meant to butt end him, or if it was just a reaction to the hit, and ended with a crappy result. Either way, if I were Tim Jackman, I'd be pissed.

What do you guys think? Intentional or not? Will there be repurcussions?

Maybe he didn't mean to butt end him, but he certainly meant to hit him in the face. With the hand that was also holding his stick.

It's a joke that this guy is in the NHL. To anyone who's ever wondered "why don't they just get a huge guy even if he can't play hockey, put him on skates and let him beat the crap out of people," there you go. John Scott. He makes Derek Boogaard (RIP) look like Gretzky.

I know you're not defending goons here, but I've got to ask, how is he any different than any other goon?

Everybody always says about Scott, "its a farce that he's in the league". But how's he any worse than Orr, Parros, McGrattan, Westgarth, etc.? I remember Milbury going off on Scott and how he's such a disgrace, but he was completely mum on all the other guys in the league who do the EXACT same thing on the ice. I honestly don't care about goons so I don't pay attention, is he a particularly disgraceful goon?

don't forget lucic & torres....

fights, good. hard hits, great. the cheap s*** though, needs to go.

I'm not saying the others you've listed are model players by any means.. but I do feel like I hear scott/lucic/torres much more than others in terms of cheap shots like this.

I think he should get a game or two.

A guy like Westgarth isn't too far off from Scott, but Scott takes the lack of ability to an all time low. Obviously guys like Parros and Orr aren't there to score goals, but don't completely stick out on the fourth line. They can skate, make a decent pass, check people and provide some energy. They just can't hang at an NHL level with those abilities so rely on punching people in the face to keep a spot in the lineup. But they can play hockey.

Scott seriously looks like they got a huge guy off the street, gave him a pair of skates and told him to go hurt someone. Take that lack of ability, throw in some of his cheap shots, and he takes it to a new low.

I know people say it jokingly, but I can seriously play hockey better than John Scott, and I'm not good. I'm also not 6'8" and 260 lbs, which is apparently the only thing holding me back from cracking an NHL roster.

Fair enough. To me they're all the same, but I understand there must be some actual variance in their ability. I've just never really bothered to pay attention.

I don't remember how many times the other guys have been suspended or questioned for doing something stupid, but Scott seems to be in the news all the time for something.

He got a 7 games suspension for the headshot to Eriksson. 2 games for leaving the bench to start a fight on a line change. Interestingly, he was leaving the bench to fight Tim Jackman. The guy he just butt ended.

I guess he didn't get anything for jumping Kessel in that pre-season game, which was a chump move.

That's exactly what I'm asking about. Why is he always in the spotlight? Because he's a worse sort of goon? Or because he's just the scapegoat? I honestly don't know.

Read harold's post above. He's been suspended several times. Fought a skill player in Kessel. Not every pure enforcer has lots of suspensions in his career. He's not being singled out. He just seems to do stupid stuff more frequently than the other enforcers.

With that said, I would welcome him on our 4th line any day. Miller, Glenffidich and Scott sounds like a great name for a line. :cheesy:

Before his time with the Sabres, I don't remember Scott ever being the subject of any controversy. He's gone after Kessel, been suspended for a hit on Loui Eriksson, and was suspended for an illegal line change to start a fight. The Kessel thing was cheap and the hit on Eriksson is viewed as dirty, but the line change suspension was pretty debatable, from what I remember.

I don't know, for some reason I think Scott's reputation as a dirty player is overblown because of his role as an enforcer. Anyone else feel that way?

This thing with Jackman didn't really seem to be intentional, but that's not to say Scott had no idea that he'd make contact with Jackman. Doesn't warrant any kind of suspension, in my mind.

Lucic and Torres are far from goons, but I get what you're saying otherwise.

How much you charge for painting a house?

With such large strokes of the brush - you certainly cover alot.

I had no idea asking an honest question about goons was so threatening to your point of view. In the future I'll be sure I'll treat all players with the subtlety and nuance they deserve instead of using categories like goon...or sniper, or offensive defenseman, or stay at home defenseman, or power forward. Ya know, because clearly those are broad stroke categories that are neither helpful nor palpable given your sensibilities.

Sorry...Just don't wish to see all tough guys lumped together as though they were useless like Scott.

He didn't say was useless, and he actually said he he didn't know much about them.

"Fair enough. To me they're all the same, but I understand there must be some actual variance in their ability. I've just never really bothered to pay attention."

He recognized they're not all the same.

In his previous post he essentially places all 'goons' in the same category with this comment... 'I know you're not defending goons here, but I've got to ask, how is he any different than any other goon?

Everybody always says about Scott, "its a farce that he's in the league". But how's he any worse than Orr, Parros, McGrattan, Westgarth, etc.?'

He's well known here for his stance which I'm fine with...We all have our opinions.

I know, but he was asking for an honest answer, he didn't know how they were different so he asked someone to tell him how they were.

Ha.

What makes Scott even more of a joke is that he isn't even a particularly good fighter. He just has a massive size advantage over everyone.

He doesn't have very good balance or technique so he can't put that much into his punch. He can usually just reign down blows on the smaller guy. But occasionally someone will catch him with a good one.

Even a heavyweight like Orr still gives up 5 inches and 40 lbs to Scott.

Sounds just like Chara. Love him but love to hate him.
