For what its worth, I wore my wings jersey at the ACC and didn't even get a comment.

Actually, a few wings fans talked to me and thats about it

It seems its very common for wings fans to show up as visitors in every arena. I think most people are used to it and even expect it

i had to get tickets off stubhub, since the ACC is sold out for the next 5 years, they were close to $200 each after "fees", AND we were almost in nosebleeds, but you can see pretty well from wherever you are at the ACC, so it was'nt so bad. Would'nt pay that much again though, rather go to Ottawa or something. Wings lost the game I went to as well. lol

I've never been to the Joe. My dad and I want to go see a game before it closes as well. I've tried to convince other friends to go, but they're like "F that, i'm not going to Detroit!!!" LOL I know theres bad parts of that city, but if your going to a game i'm sure it's just fine.

Its honestly not that bad.

Especially around the Joe.

I don't recommend walking around the favilas at night, but around the Joe, is cobo, casinos and some pretty fancy shops and good restaurants.

Its not all mad max.

Greetings fellow Red Wings fans! Iam supper exciting to finally visit Detroit in March and would love to attend the 90s night game VS Avalanche. I’ll be in D for 2-3 days and would like to experience Detroit’s culture as much as possible. Any suggestions on where to stay and where to go are greatly appreciated.

I haven't lived in Detroit for like over 10 years now, but I feel I can give some quality recommendations.

Before or after the game, if you're hungry, go to Lafayette Coney island for a coney dog (or two). It's right down town and it is a religious Detroit staple. This place has fed many drunken Wings fans. DO NOT eat at National Coney Island. It is right next door and looks cleaner and nicer, but this is a facade. We built this establishment to lure in foolish foreigners. The superior dogs are next door at Lafayette. I've ran into Babcock once in Lafayette coney and I've heard before that the Wings place big orders to their all the time. Obviously I highly recommend. This establishment is part of the true Detroit experience IMHO.

If you're looking to have a meal that's not just hot dogs and fries, my favorite recommendation is Polish Village Cafe. It's in Hamtramck, which is just outside downtown. This place does better polish foods than the Poles do in Poland IMHO. Like Lafayette, it's sorta a hole in the wall, but true Detroiter's flock to this place, you won't be disappointied. Expect it to be packed on game-day so get their a lil early. I always get the Polish plate, which is like the tour of Italy if you follow me. Highly recommend.

Other than that I don't have very specific recommendations. I know most ppl stay close to the casinos AKA greektown, motor city, or MGM. It's probably smart get a room in one of those casinos. I like to recommend AirBNB, but renting a home in Detroit is probably risky business depending on what street you end up on.. Casino rooms are probably the smartest option.

As you can see that I'm a native 'Cheesehead', and usually make a trip to the Motor City for a Wings game once a year, or every 2 years.

That said my family, and I went last spring...We stayed in Novi (have relatives in nearby West Bloomfield), purchased tickets off of StubHub, and before the game we went to McShane's Pub in the 'Corktown' district on Michigan Ave (down the street from where the old Tiger Stadium was).

The nice thing about McShane's - there's ample free parking in the open lot across the street (just behind the Coney Island hot dog stand) - they have good pub food - nice list of local microbrews - and a shuttle bus for the game.

It's also within a short walking distance from other similar establishments, and the fan shop known as 'Vintage Detroit Collection'.

I always view this place as kind of a "trap" so to speak. It's always crowded AF and I assume the food is like Apple Bees quality (I never ate there). But I guess if you wanna do Red Wings stuff it probably makes sense.

So you've never been, but you're offering an opinion. Ok.

Yes, if the only reason you're traveling to Detroit is to see the Wings, then Hockeytown Cafe would be a reasonable venture. If you're going to experience the "culture", or a local, then yeah, probably not going to be your cup of tea.

But since he/she/they are going as Wings fans, then I would recommend it. 5 star dining? No. It's about the atmosphere, and the most logical place to go if ur an out of town Wings fan.

I will agree with you that it's sumthin a real Wings fan should visit - just once though.

Otherwise there's plenty of better, and more affordable options out there that the Ilitch family isn't part of trying to gouge you for your hard earned $$$.

Corktown area has plenty of eating/drinking establishments - as does the Greektown area.

A lot of people used to go to Greektown b4 games. I assume that's still the case.

Was there in 14 for Lidstrom #retirement

- stayed at Greektown Casino (convenient)

- had BBQ at Slows ("OK" maybe a little overrated but you'll likely pass old Tiger Stadium site en route and are about 20 feet away from Michigan Central) 

- went to Motown Museum (totally rad)

- ate some coneys at Lafayette

- did go to Hockeytown Cafe (it's like Hard Rock - wayyyyyy to on the nose for me, but hey, it's close to LCA)
