1/10 GDT : Red Wings 1 at Capitals 3

I'm pretty sure someone here mentioned it, but right after Weiss took that hooking penalty against Johnny Hockey, Babcock walked over to Hiller and told him something. Right then, I was like "Weiss, meet dog house... again."

Just checked, and he ended up with 10:35 TOI.

Thanks that helps me understand but still seems kind of harsh when Weiss doesn't take a lot of penalties. The stats I've looked at on NHL.com say he has 4 PIM. That's not bad for at all for 18 games played

Yeah. That was me in the GDT.

I was sure Weiss would either play the rest of the game on the 4th line or not play at all. Turns out, he kept his spot in the 3rd, but barely played. I think Babcock sees the value of having him on the PP, but other than that, it's obvious that Weiss either isn't working hard enough or doing the things Babcock wants him to. Or both. Actually, they might be one and the same.

I'm OK with this. Except that it really annoys the hell out of me that guys like Weiss and Legwand get this treatment when Franzen gets a free pass each and every night.

Agreed. Both guys are scoring at a .67 PPG clip, yet one is averaging over 16 minutes a night, while the other is getting around 11:30. Babcock keeps saying he's in the business of winning every night, but I get the impression that he's in the business of winning his way, and only his way.

That's all fine and good, but the other guy you're playing about five more minutes a night isn't exactly busting his behind, either.

I actually think this Weiss demotion might have more to do with putting Miller, our best defensive forward, with Pulkkinen. Maybe Babs doesn't trust pulks enough on the defensive side of the puck, so he puts Miller there to compensate.

Very true. Good point.

Miller and Sheahan were excellent vs Calgary so maybe Babcock doesn't want them split up. And it makes even less sense to put Pulkinnen on the fourth line than Weiss. So was is the odd man out of last game's combo. I guess.

Anyway, special teams are obviously this team's bread and butter so I suppose it doesn't matter where Weiss, Helm, or Miller play as long as they slot in where they should when they are on the PP/K

Miller on the third line happened midway through last game. Most of the team was looking flat and Miller was actually making some plays and was rewarded by putting him with Datsyuk. I'm fine with mixing things up since we've been struggling to get offence going. Khan says Miller will probably be switched with Weiss depending on matchups:

I agree Weiss shouldn't be on the 4th line, but he did have a bad game against the Flames.

I have noticed that Weiss isn't quite as dominant as before the last injury. Maybe it's what line he's on or maybe he's worried being aggressive will just put him back in the press box.
