Could the Wings be better off trading Pav & Hank for draft picks?

I just read Damien Cox's piece on KK about blowing up the Leafs. It made me wonder if all parties may be served best if Pav & Hank would be allowed to go to a place with a genuine shot at the cup (if that would suit them) and the wings can load up on some draft picks to help launch a team in a few years when our young guys today are seasoned and would be complimented by an influx in talent for a longer run?

For many reasons Holland has not been able to reshape the team enough through trades or free agency, For more than half a decade. He has done a great job and has had some fortune in the draft and development area's.

Is anybody else wondering about this? I just don't see enough help in our future.

Would any bad team be willing to trade a top pick for those guys? Doubtful. Also, the bad teams aren't Cup contenders, so Pavel and Hank would not likely want to go to those places.

The mid level or Cup contending teams don't have high draft picks, so what's the point?

Holland and company can make good draft picks, problem is, we don't get high enough picks to draft a Tavares or Stamkos. That's what this franchise really needs for the future. And as I stated above, it's unlikely for multiple reasons that we'd get picks that high.

We're stuck with hoping that Nyquist or Tatar turn into Datsyuk and Zetterberg type players.

Did we live in the same past 5 years? Because we are finally starting to see the results of all that reshaping.

First line centers don't grow on trees, even aging ones are hard to get your hands on. Who'd center our team? Helm, Sheahan, Weiss? Larkin, AA, Nosek? No thanks. All good players, but not legit, contender level centers...yet.

Honestly, if you asked me, I think all this team really needs to have a legitimate shot is consistency in terms of offence and a slight upgrade on the back end (personally I'd be happy if they made Ouellet full time and shipped Kindl).

Jimmy is back in top form, the D has been extremely solid and our special teams are among the best in the league. What's not to like?

No offense, but do you even follow the Red Wings? There is zero chance the most loyal organization in all of sports makes such a ridiculous move... Not to mention if there is one thing this team has an abundance in, it's top end prospects. Over the next few years, we will have more NHL ready guys knocking on the door than we have spots for... And you're suggesting trading our two best players that have done everything for the organization, for picks so we can overflow the system with even more prospects?...

Also, we're really not that far away from contention. Is it likely we win the cup this year? No, probably not. Is it likely we win in the next 3-5 by maintaining the course we're on? I absolutely think so.

I do watch the Wings and I have followed then since they were called The Deat Things. Here is what I do see:

A team hovering around middle of the pack for an extended period of time.

A team that struggles to get the puck out of the defensive zone.

A team who's offense is being hampered because they all have to wait around for the puck to advance or stay in the D zone to help get it out.

A team that has had over six years to address the D in either free agency or trade and has not been able to find the right blend of value.

I see a team that is fun to watch and follow that is going to need an influx of talent within two years and because the new NHL it is tough "for us" to aquire via trade or Free Agency.

There are contending teams on the edge that DO have quality prospects that could contribute in a couple years.

How long is Hank goung to love having his lower back targeted 80 games a year without a real shot at going deep into the playoffs?

Is Pav satisfied playing withought the opportunity to go deep?

Are Hank & Pav are content, I hope they are. I really do. It's a board. it's about exchanging ides.

Hank is signed until he's retirement age, and the captain of the team and currently the teams point leader. Datsyuk is still one hell of a player as well. No go. Would never happen anyways, as others have pointed out, upper management are very loyal to players in Detroit, sometimes TO loyal, as we see with Cleary and other players such as Chelios in the past. This isn't San Jose.

Bolded my responses

A team hovering around middle of the pack for an extended period of time.

We're 4 pts. out of 1st in the East.

A team that struggles to get the puck out of the defensive zone.

Correct

A team who's offense is being hampered because they all have to wait around for the puck to advance or stay in the D zone to help get it out.

So we trade away the 2 player with the most points to fix our offence?

A team that has had over six years to address the D in either free agency or trade and has not been able to find the right blend of value.

Sick of this one. After Lidstrom/Rafalski/Stuart leaving there was bound to be readjustment. The D has been fine this year (though it needs offensive upgrade) and we have a lot of great prospects - Our D will be alright going forward.

I see a team that is fun to watch and follow that is going to need an influx of talent within two years and because the new NHL it is tough "for us" to aquire via trade or Free Agency.

Influx of new talent: XO, Pulkkinen, Sproul, Marchenko, Jensen, Mantha, Athanasiou, Mrazek, Larkin, Melen (for BottleofSmoke)

There are contending teams on the edge that DO have quality prospects that could contribute in a couple years.

LIke us? (See above)

How long is Hank goung to love having his lower back targeted 80 games a year without a real shot at going deep into the playoffs?

He signed the huge deal - he knew there would be down years. He's won a cup, played in the playoff every year of his career - few players can say that. I doubt his view on the situation is as yours is.

Is Pav satisfied playing withought the opportunity to go deep?

The fact that he just re-signed and said he wanted to end his NHL career here says he's happy with the situation/direction

Are Hank & Pav are content, I hope they are. I really do. It's a board. it's about exchanging ides.

Agreed, but you should have known your proposal would be greeted with a lot of push back.

Yet another reason why the wings need to beef up just a bit. Yes I love fighting. That's not what it's about. But there is always a reason to protect your players.

It's McGrattan. Learn to spell it right.

DAMN YOU AUTO CORRECT I HATE YOU!!!!!

As I fall in shame

PavelValerievichDatsyuk, I couldn't agree more, on all points. We have the organizational depth that most teams can only dream of, and despite never having any of these top 3-5 picks, we're still able to find a lot of gems. As sad as I will be to see the eventual retirement of players like Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Kronwall, I am extremely excited to see the likes of Pulkkinen, Mantha, Athanasiou, Larkin, Sproul, Ouellet etc. make this team full time. Not to mention, we have a pretty talented up and coming core of Nyquist, Tatar, Jurco, Sheahan, DeKeyser and Smith. I honestly believe that aside from that '02 team, this will be the talented group of Red Wings we will have seen in a long time... Whatever you do Holland, don't stray from the plan, stay the course, and keep the kids, and obviously Hank and Pav as well...

I found it funny when you mentioned how Zetterberg has won a cup and played in the playoffs every year of his career, and that few players can say that. Well, I'm not sure on this, but I would think the only guys that can say that, that are currently playing and have been in the league for over 5 years, are the guys that were on that '08 Stanley Cup team (Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Kronwall, Ericsson, Helm and Abdelkader)...

Anyone who thinks this team is not in good shape going forward, clearly hasn't been paying attention...
