Everyone keeps saying it's not a testing game cause no rinne. We didn't have Howard. So it was pretty even, battle of the backups

And, tbh, he's our AHL goalie so not really our regular back up.

Good job boys! Congrats Petr, you're playing awesome!

I didn't see the game nor did I comment on Smith. I think you have me confused with joesuffP who praised Smith.

You quoted three of us and you noted the polarizing comments. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like you being “amused” is a way of implying that all three opinions of Smith’s play tonight are different because of some inherent bias that affects the way we watch the game. This was the part of your point that I got, because it happens here all the time.

Except my quote was simply referring to that one shift of Smith’s that Hakan Andersson, Don Cherry, frank grimes, me, kip, joesuffP, and you would all unanimously agree was bad.

If I’m reading too much in to this, then forgive me. But please don’t be amused at my comment because you think it’s partisan.

Rinne is reallllllllllllllyyy hard to score on when he's on.

We did play really well, so I think we wouldve won either way, but I'd have felt better about it with rinne in.

I understand rinne is really good. But if your team can't survive a few weeks without your starter then you can't expect to go very far in the playoffs, Tampa was a good example of that last year.

To be fair, Petr isn't the standard AHL goalie.

This guy is a gem and will 100% be our starter eventually.

I don't think that is what she meant.

Wings always want to have a starter with NHL experience as a backup and not many goalies are willing to do that.

All about depth

Had to go to work after the first period. I thought Smith looked great up until that point... bad game for him overall?

I thought he was fine. He had one rough shift and it sounds like some people might be extrapolating that one shift to represent his whole game.

joseffP said Smith was playing great. Kip said Smith was a knucklehead. You said Smith had a bad shift. Three different opinions on one player in one game. Maybe your comment wasn't meant to define Smith's overall play, but it was still a different opinion than the others so I included it.

Personally? I think Smith has regressed from the beginning of the season. But that's just my opinion.

I wasn't worried about a goaltending drop off with Mrazek, but I'm still glad to see that he's giving me plenty of reasons to be confident in him. The kid looks great.

I don't think losing Rinne and losing Howard are the same thing, especially with Mrazek in net, but a win is a win and to get one this big against a team like Nashville this year, even without Rinne, is no small thing.

Anyone who thinks this Red Wings team can't go toe to toe with just about any team in the league this year is misinformed.

I think with the salary cap it's just hard to justify getting a number one type goalie to be a backup, especially with the salaries of #1 goalies nowadays. Rinne and Brendan Smith aside, I'm just going to enjoy this one. Seems like forever that the Wings have had a decent lead and you didn't have to watch worrying about giving up a late goal and facing the prospect of a shootout.

Agreed. It was an excellent game, and hopefully a precursor of things to come. I was really impressed with how fast we played. We transitioned excellently last night. It was the exact opposite of the Washington game, where we couldn't seem to get any momentum to our game. It's two good wins in a row, against two very good, very different, systems. I'm happy with the Detroit Red Wings right now.
