Bannedforlife 403 Report post Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) Im bored. My car broke down on the freeway and im waiting for the tow truck. Meanwhile, Ive been reading through the trade thread and its obvious that when it comes to valuing our players, there is a wide range of opinion on what they are worth. So I thought it might be fun to play a little game and get a better idea of the general consensus is. If you want to participate, make a list of our current roster players and before reading anyone else's answers, assign a value to each. To keep it simple, ive used only the following values: Picks (number of picks and which round), and/or prospects (top, mid or low prospect). You're free to use whatever values you feel appropriate, but those are the ones I will be using. Once youve come up with your list and have posted it, go back and read what other people have come up with and see how you did! P.S. I obviously havent put a ton of thought into this (and I dont think you should either) so please don't pick my list apart by comparing player A's value versus player B. These are just off the top of my head. Zetterberg - 2 1sts, top prospect, mid prospect Datsyuk - 1st, 2nd, top prospect Nyquist - 1st, 2nd, mid prospect Tatar - 1st, 2nd, mid prospect Sheahan - 1st, 2nd, low prospect Abdelkader - 2nd, top prospect Weiss - 2 2nds, mid prospect Helm - 2nd, mid prospect, low prospect Jurco - 1st Pulkkinen - 2 2nds Franzen - 2nd, 3rd, mid prospect Miller - 4th Glendening - 4th Andersson - 6th Kronwall - 2 1sts, top prospect, low prospect DeKeyser - 1st, 2nd, top prospect Ericsson - 2nd, 2 3rds Smith - 2nd, 3rd, mid prospect Quincey - 2nd, mid prospect Ouellet - 1st, top prospect Kindl - 4th Lashoff - 6th Howard - 2 1sts, top prospect Gustavsson - 2nd, mid prospect Mrazek - 1st, 2nd, mid prospect Edited January 17, 2015 by Bannedforlife

nawein 324 Report post Posted January 17, 2015 Kronwall and Howard were worth more than datsyuk? He also has Ouellets value way too high in my opinion. And Weiss' right now, though giving him some ice time might get him there.
kliq 3,763 Report post Posted January 17, 2015 Its really hard to judge because it all depends on what team you are trading with. For example: Sheahan - "1st, 2nd, low prospect", if we traded him to a team like Buffalo who is in the draft lottery, this would be the best trade ever lol! Though I assume you are thinking teams that are in the playoff hunt.
Bannedforlife 403 Report post Posted January 17, 2015 Like I said, I didn't put a ton of time into this. I just made a list of our players and then went down and assigned a value to them. While sitting on the side of the freeway. Waiting on the tow truck. However, in response to Datsyuk: Yes, I believe that both Kronwall and Howard would get a higher return. Both Kronwall and Howard are currently at the height of their powers, while Datsyuk has arguably started his decline. Also, both have 4 years left on their current contracts, while Dats only has 2 left before he likely calls it a career. As for Ouellet, I agree. I guess I'd change that to a 1st and a mid prospect, or maybe just a first.

My thinking was if we were to become sellers before the deadline and we were trading with teams still in the hunt. No one else wants to throw their list into the ring? jimmyemeryhunter 2,747 Report post Posted January 18, 2015 For the most part I agree with you.. But there's too much in flux with the first round picks, as to how high they are going to be and what not.
frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) Zetterberg - 1st, top prospect, mid prospect Datsyuk - 1st, 2nd, top prospect only 1 year left Nyquist - 1st, 2nd, mid prospect Tatar - 1st, 2nd, mid prospect Sheahan - 2nd, low prospect Abdelkader - 2nd Weiss - 2nd, mid prospect . teams would be hesitant touching that contract Helm - 2nd, low prospect because of being injury prone Jurco - 2 nd more NHL experience would be needed till teams might decide giving up a 1 st Pulkkinen - 2nd Franzen - 3 rd if even that he is already on the decline and signed for a few more years Miller - 4th Glendening - 3th great grinder wouldn't trade hum for a 3 rd Andersson - 6th Kronwall - 1st, mid prospect great cap hit and a reliable defender but probably a second pairing guy on a loaded team DeKeyser - 1st, top prospect Ericsson - 2nd, 3rd Smith - 2nd, mid prospect Quincey - 2nd, mid prospect Ouellet - mid prospect will need a bigger sample size till other GMs would pay more Kindl - 4th Lashoff - 6th Howard - 1st, top prospect Gustavsson - 2nd, mid prospect Mrazek - 2nd, mid prospect teams are hesitant to give up a lot for unproven goal tenders The added price tag obviously is related to the type of team for example I don't think buffalo would trade their first this year for anything the Wings have to offer. Yea, now that I think about it, some of my valuations are a little high. 2 1sts for anyone is high, because even if you are in the playoffs this year, who knows where that 1st will be next year (like the Kessel trade) Speaking of Kessel, he went for only 2 1sts and a 2nd, and that was from Toronto so there was a very strong chance that pick would turn into a top 5 (which it did) I would go back and change some of my values, but that would defeat the purpose of the challenge I think! frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted January 18, 2015 Yeah it's tough to predict but especially in the upcoming draft teams will hold on like crazy to their first. don't forget Kessel wasn't even in his prime by then and Burke thought he had a better team than they really were. Personally I'd trade everyone for a top 2 pick this year because it would accelerate the retool period.

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 18, 2015 I honestly think almost all of these are way overvalued. Teams don't part with 1st rounders much these days. I don't think there is anyway a team gives up 2 1st rounders, a top prospect and a mid-prospect for a guy going on 35 with back issues (Zetterberg).

Only a person on LGW would value Jurco for a 1st round pick.
