Larkin or Mantha?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

There's no way we should trade either of these guys unless we're offered a trade that we cannot refuse, which won't happen. These guys aren't going anywhere and for good reason. They're two of our highest picks since Marty Lapointe, back in '91, both of these guys have future franchise player potential. Keep all of our young guys and prospects, stay the course, and we will once again be a annual Stanley Cup contender. Kenny has been patient with his players for his entire tenure, there's no reason to believe that would change. I don't think there's any chance he trades, Mantha, Larkin, Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco, Pulkkinen, Athanasiou, not at this point anyway. There value is only going to increase, so why not see what you have with these young guys before you decide which one's are keepers or which one(s) to ship out.

Yes, they both do have future franchise player POTENTIAL. I think any first round draft pick has that type of POTENTIAL. Especially one that has put up the numbers that these two guys have. Will they get there? Who knows. Only time will tell...

For the right price? Absolutely. Which is precisely what I said... But I also said, that will not happen. So yes, these guys are here to stay. In 10 years, we will be happy that Holland did not trade these two studs for the quick fix, that so many trigger happy fans want.

Without starting another thread, here's this choice (unfortunately this may be an actual choice for Holland in 2016)

Sproul or Marchenko? Which one do you keep?

I keep Sproul. Not that I want to get rid of Marchenko, there just won't be enough room.

2016-17 D:

Kronner - Ericsson

Dekeyser - Smith

Ouellet - Sproul

Jensen

Sproul and Marchenko wouldn't be battling for the same role anyways.

Sproul is a potential offensive defenceman while Marchenko is a defensive defenceman.

Regardless, we'll probably end up carrying 8 anyways for injuries and depth.

That bolded part is exactly why they should be traded for the right deal, and I'm not just talking about something that is out of the realm of reason to expect.

Something else would give first. At worst, Jensen would probably be the odd man out.

I think if one misses out on a spot, I think the most likely would be Jensen.

Ouellet (still always f*** up the spelling) is pretty well claimed a spot. Everyone says Marchenko looks solid and plays a more risk-free game that will transition to the NHL well. Sproul has the greatest offensive potential and we badly need that ingredient. Then again, Jensen has an offensive upside, has a +9 to Sproul's -6. Good problem to have.

Mantha vs. Larkin is not a question we'll ever really have to ask. I like that we're asking it, though, since it means Larkin has been doing really well. Definitely made an impression in the WJC.

LOL Are you seriously saying that we should trade one or both of Mantha or Larkin just because they have been our highest picks in 24 years?... Please elaborate... Please...

It's more that mid first round picks don't always turn out. Lapointe was the highest pick in the last 2 and a half decades and was a third line caliber player.

I'd considering moving Larkin after his good wjc which really isn't truly telling of his future in the nhl but I'm thinking other gms and scouts may overrate a small tournament sample

So because, Lapointe wasn't a career first line player, and not all mid first round picks work out, we should trade away Mantha and/or Larkin for a quick fix? Makes total sense... Guess what? Not all first overall picks work out either. Maybe Buffalo (or whoever) should trade Connor McDavid a year from now, because Patrik Stefan... I'm so happy Holland actually knows what he's doing with all these kids.

Yes number9, "In Kenny We Trust" is making a comeback. It never really left me, but others will once again soon see why this man is still the best in the business.

Depends on what you mean by quick fix. 32 year old? Nope. top end guy just entering his prime years wanting out of a losing organization? Hell yes.

Like who? Just for my own understanding of your position. I mean, I don't think you're saying that those guys should be traded for a tin of beans. But what kind of player are you talking about here? O'Reilly? Yandle?

Exactly my question... Who is potentially available that you would trade Mantha or Larkin for right now? I personally wouldn't for O'Reilly or Yandle. For a Ryan Johansen or Sean Monahan type of player, I would. So yes, there are players that I would trade them for, but not for any of the players that would be available... Why are you so fixated on saying that Mantha, Larkin, Nyquist, Tatar, Jurco, Pulkkinen, Sheahan, etc, etc, etc. are not untouchable. They're all obviously available in the right deal. The problem is, that deal is never going to become available...

I'd trade Larkin for O'Reilly. Just sayin'.

I've never really watched him O'Reilly play specifically to watch him but I've read scouting reports and hear what people say about him and I have to ask. Why?

Because he's everything Larkin projects to be, but is at an age where he could help us out while we've still got Datsyuk and Zetterberg. He's a first/second line center, he's the same size as Larkin, he's super fast, he works his tail off, he's excellent defensively, has good (but not great offense) and competes like hell. Best case scenario Larkin turns into an O'Reilly type guy...but in about four or five years. At which point D and Z are gone or over the hill. Plus, losing Larkin but keeping O'Reilly, Sheahan, and Athanasiou doesn't leave us in bad shape down the middle for years to come.
