krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 29, 2015 Ok, that's fine. But we both agree that that package will not get it done for a team that is in need of a defenseman... That was my point. Not that it had to be Helm and Smith, more so that a roster defenseman would have to be involved.

Smite 399 Report post Posted January 29, 2015 What is so special about O'Reilly? He does not take penalties? Last time I checked we asked a couple of career Centermen to play the wing and he is another left handed shot. I would have a hard time giving up a prospect and a draft pick for him. 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

Great player but wouldn't help much. Wings need a bona-fide number one defender or at least a top 2 pairing guy. Not another soft player RoR will easily command 7 plus
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 29, 2015 So now, we are even more loaded up with centers? You were complaining about the abundance of centermen on this team just a few short weeks ago, and now we add another? I get that you were just throwing O'Reilly's name out there as a hypothetical, but he's not a player that this team needs going forward. If Datsyuk and / or Zetterberg were retiring after this season, then yes, we would be forced to make a move. But like I said earlier, I believe they both have a solid 5 years left with the Wings. Holland better have a plan for a smoother transition than when Lidstrom retired, and I believe he does, and that plan includes Larkin. I wouldn't do either of those proposed trades including Larkin, but we both know where each other sits on the Smith point, so let's leave it at that... I could see five injury interrupted seasons of z, but not five more of datsyuk. At least not five more years of first line c datsyuk. If he's still a 1st line center at 41 he may as well play forever. wings4thecup06 504 Report post Posted January 29, 2015 Personally I'd take Mantha right now. The Wings haven't had that kind of size/scoring ability in one player in a long long time. And it's needed. Not as badly perhaps now with the seeming emergence of Nyquist, Tatar and Sheahan, but still, for the future, we're gonna need Mantha to be good. That's not a knock on Larkin. I would happily take both . Lets hope he continues to develop really well at U of M. How many years do people think he'll be there for? 2? 3? 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted January 29, 2015 I think Larkin will make the jump to the American League in 2-3 years when he's 20-21, and then make the Wings roster full time when he's 22-23. Jimmy, I think Datsyuk will still be here in 5 years, but that's not to say he'll be our number one center. I think that's very unlikely, even for Pav... 1 jimmyemeryhunter reacted to this

I don't know man, personally I don't see that happening. There were strong waves before he re-signed last time that he wants to finish his career in Russia. Yes, we've got a better team now that looks brighter, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Pavel left after the end of his current contract and went home. 1 jimmyemeryhunter reacted to this

Yeah, he said he wanted to play in front if his home crowd while he was still playing at a high level, which is what makes me skeptical.Maybe the problems with the khl and Russia changed that, but I doubt it. Pav is a really loyal guy.

It may change his mind. Of course, at the time of his last contract extension things didn't look quite this bright for the Wings as they do now. For the record. The last thing I want is to see Pavel go. But the talk around his last contract was about him going home soon. I'm keeping my expectations low. Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted February 1, 2015 I'll take Larkin over Mantha. Mantha's the flashy guy, but I really think Larkin is built for this team. He's got "everydayer" written all over him.I remember being so pissed off when Detroit drafted Sheahan - I wanted Etem. Shows what I know. 1 wings4thecup06 reacted to this
TheXym 2,606 Report post Posted February 1, 2015 Mantha is hitting the first level where he wasn't naturally dominant. Once he gets over the hump, I think he has the skills to be an absolute beast. There is something about Larkin that makes me think he is going to be something special. Maybe it's an Yzerman-like determination to excel no matter what. Richdg 267 Report post Posted February 2, 2015 The answer is: depends. We could move 1, both, or neither. We have no idea how these 2 will develop over time. mantha is reminding us how big a jump it is to go from amatuer hockey to pro hockey this year. Yes Larkin looks great! In college. How about we let him play a pro game or 2 before we decide he is a top 6 F. Yes we all want all of our prospects to work out. But in trueth we all know 1 in 5 actually do. Now is there such a thing as an "untouchable"? No. Anyone can be moved. Money also comes into play. This is a cap sport. Players do get moved strictly because of money. So lets sit back, relax, and enjoy the development of these 2 guys.
