Marchenko recalled from GR... Ouellet sent down

I would not do that trade any day of the week. Let's look at this in terms of potential. If all the guys above pan out, then you could be trading a top line power forward (Mantha), and top 6 forward (at least) who plays with more heart, energy and desire for the puck than anyone else I know (Tatar), and a top-4 D man in Ouellet.

All for a top pairing D man?

I know you have to give to get, and that's fine. But I wouldn't do that IMO.

The odds of the prospects all hitting their top potential is slim, and Mantha doesn't play a power game anyway. He's a lot more Franzen than Shanahan. A legit #1 defenseman is one of the hardest positions in the NHL to find, and if you can get one in a trade when he's only 23 years old, you do what it takes to get it done. If Tatar or Nyquist are traded, they can flip Dekeyser or Smith for a winger to take his spot. For that matter, they can make a bigger deal with the Coyotes and bring in Vermette as well.

While OEL would be nice to have, any trade that could actually pry him out of Phoenix would end up being gross overpayment. No way their GM lets him go for a reasonable price, he'd be lumped in with Mike Milbury in terms of trading skill and most likely lose his job not too long thereafter. Taking the long-term view, I think the Wings would end up losing out on that trade unless OEL turns into Lidstrom 2.0. As much as I like OEL and his stud potential, there is a better chance of both Goose and Tatar popping 40 in the same season IMHO. That's intended more as props to Lidstrom's than a slam on OEL.

Mantha's game is evolving. We haven't had a prospect with that kind of size or scoring touch in heaven knows how long. Until I see what he's got at the NHL level, I'm not trading him. And I don;t care if he's more Franzen than Shanahan. Size is still size, and we all know that when Franzen was at his best, he was pretty hard to stop.

And I don't see why we would trade Tatar tbh. The kid is at the heart of our youth movement, and night in night out, shows the most consistent effort, isn't afraid to go to the tough areas, and loves to score. The guy is virtually a top 6 forward right now, and if he keeps going the way he is, may end up as a top line player one day.

And if we're trying to build our D up, why would we then trade away two of our better D prospects in DK and Smith?

You would obviously do that deal, and that's fine. I'm just saying I wouldn't want to throw that away, at least not at this stage.

I don't disagree with your points. But I will say that neither Smith nor Dekeyser are prospects.

It kind of blows my mind that Marchenko wants to work his way up through the farm to get to the NHL. I know he'll be with the Wings full time SOON, but damn the mills he could be potentially making in his mother land has to be tempting. Makes me happy, but I know its a road less traveled for Euro's. Especially with the top end talent he has. It either says allot about the NHL or about the Red Wings as an organ-I-zation.

I think it says a lot about Marchenko's character to want to work his way through the minors, into the best league in the world, but don't mistake Marchenko for having "top end talent". He is a very good prospect, but I would be extremely surprised if he ever becomes anything more than a third pairing shut-down guy in this league...

Great game today.

Patient and decisive with the puck, and I don't think it can be said enough how good it looked to have a eighty out there, it made smith look better getting to play his natural side.

I think marchenko may be steadier than oulette and if he keeps it up I think hell pass xo on the depth chart.

I think Landon gets another look and maybe Callahan.

I like Yandle, even more now that it seems Kronwall's offense had dried up a bit. I think they would be an awesome pair. I'd give them any D prospects who don't project to be as good as him (I know duh right) a pick and Jurco.

Honestly though, I'm not very good with making trade proposals. Too much NHL on Xbox.

Kronwall is on pace for 8 goals and 38 assists (46 points) this season. He had 49 points (8 goals and 41 assists) last season. In 2012-13 (lockout season) he had almost exactly the same production as this season so far - one more assist and the same # of goals through 48 games. How exactly has his offense 'dried up'?

@petewallner: Xavier Ouellet thought he would remain with #Wings, deals w 'challenge' of return to Griffins. #gogrg. http://t.co/PuuxklWKlZ

He can suck it up like Tatar and goose had to. He will be back, but for the time being he was able to be sent down without being waived. It was the most logical move.

So you think he's been playing well offensively lately? I personally don't, I love Kronner but I think he's been in a dry spell lately. if he ends up where he always is points wise, that's great. Regardless of anything I think we can all agree that he needs an upgraded #2.
