Do you know how asset management works? You deal in a position of surplus. We have way too many forwards, someone is going to be traded.

ya you said it ... we got a surplus of forwards so whats the plan? draft more forwards

makes sense

and detroits ways of dealing with surplus of forwards is losing them off waivers

Why is everyone assuming McCollum is gone? I wouldn't be at all surprised if he resigns and stays in Grand Rapids. All the fans are so sure that Howard is on his way out so why wouldn't McCollum be thinking the same thing? With Howard "100% on his way out" maybe Tommy Boy can make his way up as a backup to Mrazek. Also, why are Paterson and Perry not viewed as guys for Grand Rapids? And like I said, we have our number 1 in Detroit. Filling a backup / minor league role has to be the easiest to fill. There are always a dozen options in free agency every year...

Assuming he's either gone or, even if he stays, appears unlikely to be an NHL goaltender. McCollum and everyone else in the world knows that he's not going to be Detroit's full-time backup.

You need to build up a talent pool that can have an impact in the future. The Wings drafted another goalie because they have a limited pool that looks like it will make an impact in the future, once you get past Mrazek. Or, they just drafted him because he was the best talent available at the time, regardless of position. Either way, I'm fine with it.

Holland drafted Athanasiou, Nyquist and Pulks in the 4th round...if he wants to take a big center like Pearson in the mid rounds..who's heading to Nyquist's alma mater for college...I'll let him.

So Paterson and Perry don't have a shot at NHL duty but Van Pottelberghe absolutely does... Give me a break. Both of these kids have just as good a shot at being NHLers as this kid. Besides, we're going to need a backup within a few years if Howard is traded. That won't be any of these kids. It will be a free agent signing...

Please do provide insight on Pottelberghe. I would love to see what scouting report you have.

I have seen Paterson and Perry both play a lot, they aren't very good.

both?

if we got no good future defensemen in our prospect pool were really f***ed , and our pool is sinking ... we desperatly need sproul to have a big season

Name me 5 teams that have both.

Yup but not 1/2 my pc is probably bigger than this kid lol

I don't even know what this means..

I don't have any scouting report on Van Pottelberghe. I honestly don't know much at all about either Paterson or Perry. But I do know that both will have a better shot at making an impact on the organization a hell of a lot sooner than this kid. Drafting a goalie over a defenseman makes zero sense to me. Whatever.

what do other teams buisness have to do with ours ... if we dont wanna win longterm we dont draft dmen cause we wanna win now?

Because not every team has what you are asking for is my point.

Once again, let the guys running the team make those choices. We are just fans sitting behind a computer thinking we know. Holland has been successful for 20 years and believe me it wasn't because of us. Let the guy do his job without picking apart every single thing he does.

Imagine you go to work and everything you do someone criticizes you for? Gets annoying right?

I am not Holland but it annoys me when I read some of the nonsense on here most days. This is why I mostly stick to HF when it comes to drafting and FA, everything else for this site.

This is the premise of a talent pool. Since none of them are sure fire bets for the NHL, you build up a pool of what you think are the best bets (at each position) and hope that one turns into the real deal. You don't stop drafting at a position because you've got one or two guys that are maybe ok. And we hardly have an unreasonable number of (or a particularly good set of) goaltending prospects.

Listen, I agree that we need to draft defence. I'm just saying that we need more than that as well. And our goaltending talent pool is not strong.

just noticed our pick is right in the middle of jaros and vainio ... nice slap

Was it a sad day when you got fired from Detroit's scouting staff? Always agreed with a lot of what you said on here but you're not having a good day are you? When you start agreeing with Frank "lil Don Cherry" Grime's comments, you know there's something wrong. No?

My opinion on this draft? Holland and company are getting creative and none of you know enough about Red Wings hockey operations to understand what they're doing. I still remember the epic LOL meltdown LGWings had when they drafted Bertuzzi in the 2nd round. Looks like that might have been a good idea after all.

darkmanx, I am one of Holland's biggest supporters and I have said several times that I'm not going to make too big of a judgement too early. I also stated what a great job he does at the draft table... I would never sit down with Holland and call him out for any of his picks, because he and his staff undoubtedly know a hell of a log more than me about any of these kids. Does that mean that fans that know very little about these guys can't debate amongst themselves whether or not they were good or bad picks? I don't like the picks, you do. Not a big deal. We'll find out in a few years whether or not they were good picks or not...

Good call. I remember the Bertuzzi pick as well and the meltdown here.
