Nasty Business-Roussel ejected for cross-check to McQuaid's throat

Tonight in Boston. Dallas' Roussel cross-checks Adam McQuaid in the throat as the two seem ready to square off. There's a Vine (short video clip) of it. Five minute major. Game misconduct.

Low down dirty punk. How dare he use his stick to attack a vulnerable opponent in a vulnerable place? That's the kind of gutless crap only the dirtiest of players, and trashiest of teams, can condone...

errr...or maybe the chickens are starting to come home to roost?

'Old Time Hockey' would've seen a line brawl with Roussel getting bloodied...Surprisingly nothing happened immediately after that.

I have some fond memories of watching Chelios getting his ass kicked by Gerard Gallant, and by a few others as well.

Chelios wasn't as tough as some would like to think...His only fight victories came up against guys like Fedorov, or Robitaille, but like you said - he was known more for his cheapshots.

I agree with the parts about Chelios. I disagree with everything else. Everybody acts like line brawls happened every other night in the old days. They didn't. Guys didn't fight after each and every cheap shot back then. Want proof? Gordie Howe was LEGENDARY for elbowing. He had very few career fights (relative to his contemporaries). If he had to fight after every dirty elbow, he'd have a lot more.

The unsung, and sadly unheralded, characteristic of Old Time Hockey was that players often manned up and played through cheap bulls***. They let a lot more go. It was EXPECTED you'd get elbowed, or hit in the face with a stick. It was part of the game. It didn't require a line brawl, or even a fight, every time it happened.

As far as McQuaid goes. He's a tough guy. Big enough to eat hay. He was also uninjured on the play. He doesn't need anybody to stand up for him. I'm sure he'll fight Roussell the next time they play.

First off, who the hell was going to fight Gordie? You'd just take that elbow like the beotch you were and then say "thanks Mr Howe."

But yeah, forget fighting after sticks and elbows, dudes are doing it now after good, clean hits.

And yes - Howe only had 2 fights if I remember correctly...He was 1 guy nobody wanted to mess with.

That's what I was saying

If he did that to Lucic, this thread would be titled "Hero Roussel ejected for cross check to Lucic's throat"

An elbow is one thing.....Getting a cross check to the throat is something entirely different .

And yes - Howe only had 2 fights if I remember correctly...He was 1 guy nobody wanted to mess with.

I think Gordie had more than two fights. It may be that only two fights are remembered or recorded somewhere. Otherwise, he had only one fight besides Fontinato. That might be right, but it doesn't sound right.

I mean Lilja had way more than two fights.

If he did that to Looooch he would have made him his *****. That guy got angry because Prout landed and absolute right handed bomb and still got up immediately can only imagine what he would have done with Roussel but I was very disappointed with the Bruins reaction I thought for sure Chara or Looch would jump Roussel before the refs can do anything.

This had the potential for a nice linebrawl

In the good old days Roussel would have left the game on a stretcher for stuff like this, unbelievable.

The last time I remember someone leaving on a stretcher for an arguable "cheap shot" was Steve Moore. Wouldn't exactly call that the "good old days".

Meh.

As already pointed out, McQuaid not only threw his knee out to attempt to injure Roussel on that play, but after he (McQuaid) hit the boards, he immediately turned around and was in the process of throwing his gloves off and throwing a haymaker to Roussels head. Roussel acted instinctively and just got McQuaid in the throat.

Most of us likely would have done the same thing in the heat of the moment with some large guy about to hit you in the head with a big haymaker with only a split second to respond.

I guess this is as good a place as any to link this Mike McKee article. According to the article, his 2 points in 24 games, and one penalty per game average, is apparently "proving wrong" the people who doubted he could become a productive player for Western. Lol.

Yet more proof that really huge guys can mesmerize idiots.
