Good to see they're getting along

Great player, and integral to the teams resurgence...but I still say his jersey shouldn't be retired. Happy to see him in the Hall though.

Only chance he had is if he continued to play here and retired as a Red Wing. But it would still be doubtful.

Nice article, thanks for sharing.

I for one would be happy to see 91 in the rafters but I don't know if it happens.

The wings are all about loyalty and the way he left probably ruined his chances.... I could see 91 "unofficially retired" in Detroit though; not in the rafters but never worn again.

I agree. I prefer to see career Wings to the extent possible. With Sergei it's about him leaving, but more importantly about WHEN he left. I wouldn't really care if he had a long career in Detroit and then finished out in Russia, or if he bled Red and White and then left at the end for one final shot at the Cup. But he left in his prime. That's a no-go for me if you want to be immortalized at the Joe.

I disagree. If Sergei Fedorov played his entire career in Detroit and retired as a Red Wing, I have little doubt that his number would have been retired.

Kip, do you think datsyuk and zetterbergs jerseys will be retired? ive always wondered....

I don't think their numbers will be. I could see both of them getting the Hall of Fame, but getting your number retired by the Wings is even harder than getting into the Hall. The only other guy that I'd consider putting in the rafters would be Osgood. He's easily top ten all-time at his position and has all the credentials. But even that, I'd admit, is arguable.

The only criteria for getting your jersey retired is because the owner says it should be retired. I don't know where fans get the idea that there's some sort of standard or litmus test that has to be passed. If Mike (or Chris or Marian or whoever is making the decisions these days) says someone's number will be retired, it will be retired. The Wings and their fans are fortunate to have so many players in recent years to have this discussion about.

While there are no set standards, technically speaking, there basically are.. Yes, we've been very fortunate as fans to have so many players that could potentially be held to such standards. And to a lot of people, federov doesn't live up to those standards and therefore they don't think he deserves his number in the rafters. He could potentially make up for his short comings and have his number retired but I don't see it happening. I'd be very happy if it did though.

Idk.. If Hank manages to play out the rest of his contract and gets another cup and Conn Smyth (which him being our consistent playoff performer is quiet plausible) I believe he has a good chance of getting his jersey retired. I think chances for ozzy are "lower" because he didn't spend his entire career in Detroit nor was he "Captain" status. Z will always be THAT 7th round pick that stayed here his entire career and won stanley cup/MVP, is a triple gold club member and captained his national team. Z's story is just too damn unique to not take notice. Plus Hank and Emma do quiet a bit for the city and I can't think of any fans that "dislike" Zetterberg. Dude's just well respected and all of that is highly considered when you get that number retired. We have to see how the rest of his contract plays out and what becomes of the Red Wings.

Agreed.

Just think if Feds had an opportunity to play with Lids (for several more seasons), Dats, Hank, etc.

As a fan - I remember how frustrating it was with all the issues between him, and Holland...To me - Feds will always be a Red Wing.

I respectfully disagree. For one, Feds was never a captain, and never would have been. Secondly, Yzerman and Lidstrom were generational legends. Yzerman was Detroit’s boy and Lidstrom has more hardware than Tony Stark. That’s what it takes to get your number retired in Detroit. Fedorov was never that type of player. He’s just not rafter-jersey material for these reasons.

I feel like I have to say this: I really really loved Fedorov. He was the “coolest” Red Wing I’ve ever seen. Cooler than Z even, and that’s saying something. When I was in my teens, playing hockey, I wanted to be him. But I see no scenario that ultimately gets his number retired. Just my opinion.

His steez was unmatched.

I remember when he first came out with all his Nike gear, those skates with the bubbles on the side were so damn sweet.

I bought Nike gloves just to be like him.

But I don't think they'll ever retire his number.

If anything they'll only give it to an elite player who wore it somewhere else and signs during free agency.

Agree with sentiments that Sergei will not be in the rafters and rightfully should not be. However, he is still one of my favorite Red Wings ever, and in his prime, simply one of the most talented, perhaps the most talented, Red Wings ever. Godspeed, #91!

What "a lot of people" think or the fans think or the writers think doesn't matter. It's the Red Wing brass that makes the decision. If you want to believe that article, it sounds like Mr. I still has a soft spot for Sergei. And if he wants it retired, it's retired. If he doesn't it's not. It isn't a democracy vote, it's a dictatorship. One of the perks of being an NHL franchise owner. I think anyone who knows anything about Larry Aurie's story universally agrees his number should be in the rafters. But it isn't because Mike Ilitch says so. End of story.

Yeah, I understand why jerseys get retired. But the debate is more if they deserve to be retired in the eyes of the fans.

I know it ultimately means nothing but it's a fun discussion for fans to have and us red wings are fortunate to have so many players to potentially have that debate about.

However if the surging fan base absolutely hates a player, Mr. I and crew aren't going to go against popular opinion. They do have a fan base that drives money into their accounts.. Now in terms of Federov it's pretty simple, MOST of the fans still have a place for Federov in their hearts and have moved passed his whole contract fiasco. I dont think retiring his jersey would really cause as much controversy as a lot of people are thinking it would. Federov was literally like the "Datsyuk" fan favorite of the 90s if you guys remember that. It's easy to forget the past but if you look back into it, Feds was a REALLY popular player in Detroit and around the country.

I'm not making a case for whether he belongs up there. I'm just saying; it's not as controversial as it may seem to be. 7 years ago maybe. Even 1 year ago maybe. But I think Feds showing up to Winter Classic and talking good about the fans probably helped ease some tensions. I remember thinking back in 2006 or so that Feds would never be welcomed back in Detroit blah blah blah.. And look now.. He just got on Michigans HoF. Times change, people move on. All we can do is wait and find out.
