Good to see they're getting along

It doesn't matter to me either way if Fedorov has his number retired. If he does, good for him, if not, it doesn't bother me. There isn't a timetable on it either. I think Lindsay and Delvecchio didn't have their numbers retired until the 1990's.

I guess if I had a criteria, it would be, if you have to ask and you have to debate it, then it's no. With Yzerman and Lidstrom, it wasn't if, it was when. I know other teams have things like a ring of honor or something similar. That might be something for the new arena, a way to honor the very talented, but not quite legendary Red Wings.

The only criteria for getting your jersey retired is because the owner says it should be retired. I don't know where fans get the idea that there's some sort of standard or litmus test that has to be passed. If Mike (or Chris or Marian or whoever is making the decisions these days) says someone's number will be retired, it will be retired. The Wings and their fans are fortunate to have so many players in recent years to have this discussion about.

That's true.

Ilitch had the gall to unretire Aurie's number.

^ That's true and I believe it's because he wasnt a hall of famer. Illitch standards.

It's disrespectful to a man's legacy and to his family to have done that. Ilitch was classless. You don't take a guy's jersey down just because you don't think he was deserving. There's a lot of undeserving players in sports who have had their numbers retired.

A good story about the Larry Aurie situation. Kind of baffling to me. If you're not going to re-issue the number, after 60 or 70 years or whatever, geez, hang it in the rafters already. Just seems like there has to be more to this story.

It is pathetic that Ilitch did this without explanation.

Aurie may not in retrospect be one of hockey's greatest all time players, but he was important to the Wings and was one of the team's earliest pioneers, which is why his jersey is retired.

Ilitch needs to realize that hockey existed before 1950. Moron.

i agree osgood was tha man

Damn right!! His contributions to the Wings past success is massive. If they decide to retire another number, I think it should be a goaltender, and it should be Osgood. Sawchuk is the only other goalie to have his number retired by the Wings, and while Osgood was'nt as great as he was, you'd be hard pressed to find another goaltender who spent most of his career (14 years) in Detroit with his accomplishments and numbers.
