Does Kenny Hate Mickey?

I get it, it's sacrilege to say anything bad about the best announcer EVAR!!!! because he's been in the booth forever. That doesn't change the fact that by the third period he sounds like you're sitting next to him in a bar. He's not as good as he used to be, and a lot of times he seems to fall into complaining about the refs and weak penalties, chuckling when the Wings get away with something he'd yell at the refs for, dropping a catch phrase, complaining about broken sticks, and waxing nostalgic about the good old days when you showed respect for another guy by "feeding him some lumber" when he was going to hit you. He's better between periods, but during the game I think he's slipping. If you disagree, or want to just say "It's Mickey and he's awesome and if you don't like it go piss up a rope," fine.

BTW, Madden was bad his last couple years, and Pat Summerall was the boozer in that duo.

I actually have real reasons from my own observations that result in my favorable opinion of Mickey Redmond. A few of them are precisely the reasons you dislike him. You and I simply have different perspectives and want different experiences

I totally agree that it's like watching a game with him in a bar and I very much enjoy that aspect of his persona. It's genuine, down home, as if you are sitting watching a game like he's your uncle that actually skated in the nhl.

I like the way he comments on penalties, especially compared to other teams color guys. Mickey will often point out that our opponent "Gets two minutes for playing hockey, but we'll take it", whereas other guys take the Homer road and make it sound like it was the most egregious penalty ever as they watch a replay that shows a ghost infraction. I always feel insulted as a viewer when Panger or anyone does that.

Mickey is still sharp as a tack when it comes to pointing out things at game speed that I have missed. One example: Countless times he points out a deflection on the goal that I missed, then sure enough you see it on the replay. However, when I watch other teams play I'm dumbfounded at how often they credit the point shot with the goal when the deflection was plain as day and the camera is on the deflector getting congratulated, not the shooter. Then they show the replay and they're surprised as can be at the obvious: "OH!!! It was DEFLECTED". Sigh. Roll eyes.

And Mickey tends to point out things that only an nhl player knows, where other "more professional" guys tend to point out things that are obvious to the hockey fan, as if their broadcast is geared toward a least common denominator viewer demographic or something.

I enjoy his anecdotal ramblings. For example, Abby being a Muskegon boy. His father Joe Abdelkader always paces back and forth in the living room when the game is on. " You can sit down now, Joe, Justin scored a goal."

Believe me, I could go on about how he greatly enhances my Red Wings viewing experience.

Wow... some of you people are really pathetic. You have absolutely no idea what was going on before Ken made that comment, and yet you come up with all this crap! Mickey Redmond is more with it about hockey than most anyone I've ever heard talk about the game... then, and now. And Ken Daniels is no slouch either. You know it's talk like this that get people thinking about things they shouldn't. Maybe Larry Murphy got let go just because someone started talking trash about him in a forum like this. Larry Murphy is another person I regard very highly as a hockey announcer. It sure is easy to sit back and listen to half of what is said, and go then go away and start making up things out of mid air, so that you can then spew it all over this forum... like you know something about the game. If you don't like listening to Mickey and Ken, try changing over to the Golf channel instead. I don't want you to ruin my game.

Actually I've noticed a number of times where Mick says "That might have been deflected" And then you proceed to watch 3 replays until he finally sees that it was deflected even though it was obvious on the first replay.

There have been a few other things that he's been doing that bother me. Not that I don't think he's great but he's definitely slipped a bit.

The fact that you can look past a few gaffes and notice he's still great makes me think happy.

Cuz a lot of people on here don't have the same respect.

I take that back, not a lot, but some.

Apparently no one here knows anyone over the age of 60? He's just getting older, like everyone does. You see it with all the older announcers. They aren't as sharp, they misspeak, they repeat some things more than once, they call players by the wrong name, they exaggerate some old stories, they overuse some of their famous buzzwords. I don't get what the big deal is. I'd rather have that than someone like Ozzie or Murphy who just can't do the job. I love that his passion for the game and the Red Wings is still as strong as ever.

I mean yeah, aside from the scores of people here defending him.

But rational people are easy to overlook.

I don't think he breaks down plays well anymore he was always behind some upper echelon guys previously but he seems to have become more a fan than an analyst

Careful now, can't say anything bad about Mickey or you're a hater who doesn't know anything and is just speculating and you better list 50 examples in detail of why you think the way you do.

More passive aggressive hyperbole? I expected nothing less.

If you want to exaggerate my point to make your whole "He sounds like a drunk" spiel seem less completely off-base, go right ahead. I think most members here can see through that sort of thing, as much as they can see that Mickey is an enthusiastic color guy, not a guy who sounds drunk.

Like I said, you don't know what a drunk is.

You don't seem to understand that there are varying degrees of being drunk.

I wouldn't say he sounds hammered. I know he doesn't drink, but there are times he sounds like he might be a little loose.

He's old as balls and played hockey his whole life, I'm amazed the dude still has a human jaw and a brain that can figure out what the function of a button is, let alone do above average play by play. Edited by jimmyemeryhunter

Damn. Mickey isn't even 70 years old yet. He set up Fedorov on a beautiful pass in the 2014 alumni game. "Old as balls" ain't even close.

I'll never get the time I wasted reading this "Mickey's Drunk" garbage back...

Honestly, I'd say if you don't understand the greatness of Mickey's analysis, you probably haven't been a hockey fan for long enough. There's obviously some nostalgia on my part, but Mickey's an old timer who knows the game and understands it in it's present form and the glory days as well. Nothing like those "old time hockey" stories.

Show Mick some respect...
