Going To My First Wings Game - Suggestions?

The Post and Cobo Joe's are a zoo on game days.... Hit up Greektown, there's plenty of cool spots to eat/drink.

Sweetwater Tavern is ridiculous, and probably easier to grab a seat over Slo's (they are always packed)

Get some drinks here:

Sugar House http://www.sugarhousedetroit.com/

Two James http://twojames.com/

Any seat at the Joe is a good seat...Have fun, enjoy one of the last great hockey arenas.

Sixth row back in the lower bowl just either a little to the right or the left of the goalie is the best seats imh.

i agree as well, but we decided that sitting right on the glass would add a little something special to the experience. Never sat on the glass before. I think if i knew i'd have many more trips to the Joe, that's exactly the area i like to sit as well.

I'll second (or third) Slow's for BBQ, but they are right about getting there early in the day...I have friends who had to wait for a table because it was so packed and if I remember right they don't do reservations.

Hockeytown isn't bad but it's definitely crowded after a game. I can't do Greektown - the noise and the crowds get to me, and even though they say no smoking, it's just awful there. I almost have to hold my breath walking through to get to the People Mover.

Hockeytown Authentics is always cool. I'm due for a visit there one of these days...it's been a while.

But whatever you do, have fun!

Good choice getting seats in front of the glass. Never been to the Joe, but I love watching hockey games from that close. Makes it a bit hard to see all the way down ice sometimes, depending whats on the side of the rink in front of you(team benches, etc.), but theres nothing like seeing and hearing, sometimes even feeling, a bone crunching check a few feet right in front of you.

Yes... It is dee-lish... best in MI. Not sure bought dat..

It's a strange thing bout Mex food... The dirtier the shop.. The better the food

I'm sure a place exists with certain dishes that are better, but overall, I've never found a place better than Mexican village.

Especially for chicken floutas.

Which I get every time i go, they are amazinggggg.

I also haven't found a better nacho.

Man, this game can't come soon enough. with all these great food recommendations, we're gonna have a tough time whittling it down. One thing is for sure, a fantastic time will be had, that's for sure! I really appreciate everyone putting in their thoughts!!

Anything i should be sure to see/do once we get into the Joe, besides taking lots of photos? Being my first trip in (unfortunately probably my last too) i'm sure we'll walk around some, but is there anywhere on the inside or outside that a huge red wing fan will be bummed if they didn't see? Trophy displays, sculptures, plaques on the wall, retired number displays, or anything along those lines?

If you're a boxing fan, go into cobo halls foyer.

Then right down the street is the statue fisting the air, and close to that is the spirit of Detroit statue(the one you see with the wings jersey during playoff times)

Also the best prostitutes are on......

Kidding.

Ha.

But if you get there early enough,(call ahead and check the wait) slows should be your first option, IMO.

And after the game, make sure you go and get yourself a coney dog, choose between Lafayette and american(try a couple of each and choose yourself)

When I lived downtown american wasn't open 24 hrs, so Lafayette became my favorite.

Make sure you go get a hot dog. And choose your favorite of the two. That's a must.

Slows only if you can get in.

If not, seriously, Mexican village in Mexican town(on Bagley street)

Is literally the best Mexican food that I'VE personally ever had(aside from homemade)

It's not bad if you go upstairs to the individual urinals

This. If you're taking a lady with you to the game, make sure she knows how to get to the upstairs bathroom quickly. It's pretty much in and out up there, otherwise she'll miss half the period.

Back when I used to dress like a woman those bathrooms would have been awesome!

No. Peeing at the trough is part of the experience. I personally hate them, but I wish they would install them at the new arena. Think of what a mindf*** it must be for the opposing fans. They must think we're animals.

Hahaha. I wonder if they have a trough in the visiting team locker room

As a fan of the Red Wings since the mid-80's i've always wished to see a game in person. I live in Maryland so coordinating a quick trip in, has typically been a challenge to pull off. But that day is finally coming. Me and one of my best buds are going to the April 2nd game against the Bruins. (unfortunately he's a Bruins fan, but a hell of a guy, so i let it slide). Anyway we are flying in that morning. I'm not familiar with the city at all, game day routines, post game hangouts, etc. We are gonna stay in the city, close enough to the people mover to get us to the Joe so we won't need a car. Can anyone suggest places to go before the game, things to do after the game, must do things, etc.

Sorry so long winded and vague about what i'm looking for, i just want to make sure my first visit to the Joe is a memorable one. Just go and have fun it's a great place to watch hockey

thanks!

By the way, i did splurge and we are sitting on the glass around the blue line.

I didn't want to make a separate thread for this question and it seemed sort of relevant to the topic, but sorry anyway for hijacking the thread. Where do you guys usually park? I used to park over at Cobo but I recall last time I went I wasn't able to, and wondered if this was still the case?

Park at the greektown casino garage and take the people mover. Really this works with any garages near the people mover like the Zlot, compuware, and book cadillac garages. Also look into valeting the car near a restaurant/casino near the people mover to make it easier as well. you can also park at Nemo's, Tommy's, Hard Rock, Old Shillelagh, Cheli's, Hockeytown, and Anchor Bar among many others that will transport you to the game in a shuttle. You could park for free at the MGM garage and use Uber/Cab to the game. Plenty of options.
