Once again blowing a lead and giving up 3 goals

Wings are known for defense, wasn't last year a "we're a defensive team first" thing? But the real point is this has been happening more frequently lately, a few games ago the team gave up 3 goals in less than 5 minutes at the end of a period, and I know there have been a couple of games where we blew leads and lost. And yes all teams do that, and yes overall we are doing well but these recent episodes just make me think it might need a little more emphasis on maintaining a lead. My old heart can't take the ups and downs like that 7-6 game the other night where we lost two 2 goal leads if I remember correctly. Any way maybe it's just me but I am a bit apprehensive about it.

One thing that I think we sometimes lose sight of is that our boys play against some damn good opponents, and, despite their best efforts, they aren't always going to contain them. It isn't often that a team is going to get manhandled for a full 60 minutes. Heck, even when the boys are playing awesome, a fluke goal or a bad kick off the boards coupled with their goalie standing on his head or just getting lucky or a ticky-tack call can swing things. I'm very pleased that they can recover and salvage wins or at least loser points as well as they have.

I'm a huge advocate of, when your opponent is down and reeling, stomping on their throat with your skate to finish them to avoid them getting back into it. In the past, the "old wings" seemed to ease up far too much with a two goal lead. Somebody who has more archival footage and time could probably do a comparison, but it seems like this season, it's either a fluke play or a ticky-tack call that lets the bad guys back into it, or they just make a couple of darn good plays, rather than our boys easing up like it seemed in the past. Unlike the past, this year, they have a bit of the "eye of the tiger" to fight back whereas it felt like they were more prone to fold in the past.

I think this recent trend has to do with goaltending. Howard has struggled since coming back. Hopefully he can get back to way he was playing. As for Monster's game, it's always an adventure with him. 3 goals against was his norm last year (2.63 GAA). He was in his first game after coming back anyway.

You have to contextualize this slight problem further. The team, they've done well without Z, Franzen, Quincey, and Helm (last game). Beating the best team in the league with those injuries. Maintaining your place in the standing without your captain and point leader (was when he went down). All during one of the hardest stretches of the season. These are accomplishments that should overshadow the less-than- ideal way we've won some of them.

You don't remember correctly. It was Dallas that lost the two leads.

I don't have any inclination to check, but I suspect if I did I would find that the Wings give up a lead less often than most teams. That it's happened twice recently just skews the memory, as shown by your faulty memory of the Dallas game.

Blowing leads is a problem that needs to be addressed in the same way that allowing goals or failing to score is a problem. You always want to be better of course, but that doesn't mean that every negative thing needs special attention.
