Red Wings acquire Erik Cole, conditional 3rd from Stars

You keep referencing his age, but I don't see how this is relevant considering he is about to be a UFA. How good is going to be next year or 2 years from now is meaningless. All that matters is how well will he perform in the next 3 months. His injury history is a bit concerning, but this was low risk so I don't see what the big deal is. You cant get something for nothing.

Just saying at this point in his career he's on the decline and almost over ... If I remember correctly I think last year maybe 2 his numbers weren't too good ... I targeted him personally cause I like his game and didn't think at this point in his career he'd cost us 2 prospects and a high pick ... That was my mistake

I know a lot of people see him top 6 and he probably will be but I think if we had him with sheahan and pulkkinen on the 3rd line for now and playoffs it might be a big line for us

I just heard on the leafs game we picked up cole cause were worried about Franzen which is probably true .... No ones heard any news right??

Holland is the king of the deadline band-aid. Just grab some old broken down players and say you improved the team for the playoffs.

Can't wait to see Babs passive aggressively tossing Cole on the 4th line to rot away.

GET US A DMAN WORTH A DAMN.

Yeah bring a guy in who has scored 18 goals and has speed for a 36 yr old is terrible... give me a break... Erik Cole is a really good pick up

Detroit got a top 6 forward and gave up a second and two prospects, not even our elite ones

Janmark is good, but we're so deep down the middle it doesn't matter a whole lot

Backman would be behind Sproul, Hicketts, Ouellet, Marchenko anyway so who cares

What matters to me is we kept Mrazek Mantha Larkin AA XO Sproul and Marchenko which is awesome

18 goals, hits a ton, brings much needed size and physicality qualifies as broken down? It's not like Cole is this 36-year-old slug that can't skate either. Cole does improve the Red Wings for the playoffs -- that isn't just organizational lip service.

I bet Babcock is super excited to fit Cole into the lineup.

You're overrating their value. A lot. Would be different if they were in the AHL and playing well. But that is not the case.

Well that could be true but janmark never really had a shot here and he's 22 ... Don't bite my head off I'm not comparing him to datsyuk or zetterberg but if I'm right both didn't play in the ahl either and both werent in the nhl at 22 ?

And as much as we love and hope larkin athanasiou mantha are gonna be top nhl guys ....daigle and Stefan were first overall picks and never did anything so we never know what happens until these guys all play

That's my worry with this move. If Babs gives him a good chance, and just let's him play, it will be a good move. If he does'nt, it does'nt do much good at all. Physicality has a way of working itself out of players when they hit Detroit.

One thing some of the nay-Sayers are forgetting...we are right up against the contract limit and not a million miles away from the prospect limit, so seeing as backman was taking up a contract and janmark wa either going to need another this summer or remain an unused prospect, this and the departure of Cleary and gus will make sure we actually have the room to both sign some of the other flourishing prospects in the system and do a bit of shopping in the FA market without having to waive other players closer to the big league.

I had high hopes for both prospects, but backman sort of burnt his bridges and janmark hasn't massively kicked on since we drafted him, and as outlined above we were going to lose them or someone else for nothing this summer anyway if we didn't move them.

It's potentially a good move for Dallas, but might end up being a poor one for them unless both players can put on weight in a noticeable way. As for the wings, we got a player that improves some of weaknesses for a return that will only really coat us if we get to the ecf and he contributes, as for a variety of practical reasons neither prospect was likely do do anything here. And perhaps we'll just find another European FA this summer like Nosek!

Ken Holland confirmed the third-round pick they got from Dallas goes back to the Stars if Wings reach conference finals.

Holland said he'll continue working phones seeking upgrade on defense, but if they do nothing he's happy with his blue line as it is.

Holland also said they haven't ruled out possibility of Franzen returning this season.

This. why are we wasting assets on players we don't need... we have loads of guys that can step into our fwd group. when helm and z get healthy we won't have room for one of pulks/jurco as well as andersson.

Our D is a disaster and we could have used that 2nd in a package for a dman.

Andersson won't be on the team come playoffs. He hasn't played badly, but I'm not sure why you want him in our lineup.

Pulkinen probably won't be in the playoff lineup either unless he really starts contributing. That's fine. He needs more time to get used to the NHL. Anyway, it's very possible that Mule won't be here for playoffs so that would allow 1 back in.

Nyquist-Z-Cole

TT-D-Helm

Franzen-Shea-Abby

Miller-Glen-Jurco

Andersson/Cleary

Our D is not a disaster. Needs 1 upgrade, but it's working out for us.

I do think Janmark has upside. Don't doubt it at all. But he is far too unproven to have much in the way of trade value. While it would have been nice to package him in bringing in a right handed dman, it would be a pipedream due to his lack of trade value. Guys like Pulks have some trade value. Not Janmark. Not even gonna mention Backman as he is damaged goods as far as the Wings go. He was never going to play here, and other GM's know that. He literally had no trade value as long as he was our prospect. The 2nd rounder is the biggest part of this trade that we gave up. Not the end of the world as we still have our first, and if things dont work out and the Wings don't make a run this year, we get the Stars 3rd rounder. Which is not at all far back from where our 2nd rounder is really. 20 spots down tops? Which makes little difference in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. And if we don't get that 3rd? That's because we make the final 4. And if we do make the final 4, I'd bet my left ******** Cole would be an important part of that.

He isn't alone. There isn't a whole lot not to like about these guys through 60 games.

True that. He should'nt stand pat on the blueline is all. Grab us somebody. Anybody. And grab us somebody while were waiting.

I dunno, Pulkkinen's matched Jurco's goal total (2) in far fewer games, and he's just getting warmed up. Cole is, at this time, basically a better Jurco (big, physical goal-scorer with good wheels). Pulkkinen gives us a dimension that no one else does.
