Red Wings acquire Marek Zidlicky from NJ for Cond. 2016 3rd Round Pick

At first I thought this was a good move, but his numbers this season are nothing to write home about. Still, he's a better puck moving defenseman than most our jobbers on the blue line. Hopefully, his woes had more to do with NJ than him being an old defenseman.

P.S. Only Holland would trade for a guy that got beat up by Sidney Crosby in a fight. :glare:

Ya, all of Pulk, March and Jurco will all be "sent to GR" on paper, in order to qualify them for the AHL playoffs. They will be "recalled" after 3PM when the roster limits are no longer set at 23, as long as they fit under the cap.

Jurco should stay down there until next month and break that nasty cold streak.

Crosby doesn't beat people up, he wrestles them to the ground and tries to concuss them, then take advantage of their b-holes.

I see Zidlicky as the 7th defenseman. He is not really an upgrade.

As a puck mover he's probably better than Kindl or Smith. But you certainly don't want to go giving him too much responsibility or ice time. Puck mover on the third pair, and second PP QB seems like the most logical choices to me.

"@Bill_Roose: Marek Zidlicky will become the 14th player in #RedWings history to wear No. 28. Others were Reed Larson, Dallas Drake, Brian Rafalski, etc."

Why not his old number 3?

I just realized that I haven't been this excited for a move since we acquired the great Jason Woolley from Buffalo

Chicken Parm and Pierre were gushing on TSN about how great a Zidlicky/Dekeyser pairing would be.

Maybe. I just don't see it though. Admittedly, it's not like I've watched every game the guy's played. If our team strategy continues to be shot suppression, I don't see how breakup up one of our better pairs in Quincy-Dekeyser, and making that pair smaller, weaker, and less defensively responsible will make it better.

If they think Marchenko can do with Dekeyser what Quincey can do. And Quincey-Zidlicky can be an effective third pair then we're ok. But to me, adding Zidlicky to the top four just made us marginally better offensively, and a lot worse defensively.

That's because he never starts in the defensive zone. To get a scoring chance when Zidlicky is on the ice you've got to go 200 ft. Not really a surprise.

Edit: Nevermind, his defensive zone starts are pretty low. But not insanely low. I'll give him his credit there. He starts in the D-zone a little more often than Smith does.

Not too Shabby Kenny! I was worried about the cost of picking up Pylon so this was good!

Agreed. I'm much happier with this than I would have been if we'd given up the farm for Dion.

I would have preferred Anisimov and Wisniewski. But I'll settle for this. It's not a sea change in the quality of our team, but we didn't give up that kind of return either.

Fingers crossed Dats, Z, and Kronner stay healthy a couple more years though.

I think the transition is going pretty smoothly. Tatar and Nyquist are coming along nicely. Pulkkinen shows a lot of promise, DeKeyser is getting better every day. I think the vets will stay healthy long enough that when they leave these younger guys will be superstars. I'm more optimistic about this transition from Datsyuk and Zetterberg to these young guys than I was 10 years ago when Datsyuk and Zetterberg were taking over for Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanahan and Hull.

At first glance I liked this move, however thinking about it I'm going to have to see how the D pairings shake out before I can decide. If this sends Marchenko back down, I won't be too pleased. I'd have rather kept the pick and rolled with Marchenko. If it's a move to get TWO right handers in the lineup, I'm all for it.
