Both FLA goaltenders injured in same game

Anyone else seen anything like this before? Derek McKenzie or Scottie Upshall was rumored to be going in net, and goalie coach Rob Tallas even suited up. Montoya tried to fight through his injury but ultimately couldn't, and Luongo came back in after having been seen wearing street clothes.

Hold on, how is a goalie coach allowed to enter the game?

Isn't he supposed to be one of the 20 players dressed for the game to play?

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/what-if-both-goalies-get-injured-nhl-rule-emergency-backup-goaltender/

"Each team shall have on its bench, or on a chair immediately beside the bench, a substitute goalkeeper who shall, at all times, be fully dressed and equipped ready to play. Except when both goalkeepers are incapacitated, no skater in the playing roster in that game shall be permitted to wear the equipment.

"In regular League and Playoff games, if both listed goalkeepers are incapacitated, that team shall be entitled to dress and play any available goalkeeper who is eligible. This goalkeeper is eligible to sit on the player’s bench, in uniform. In the event that the two regular goalkeepers are injured or incapacitated in quick succession, the third goalkeeper shall be provided with a reasonable amount of time to get dressed, in addition to a two-minute warm-up (except when he enters the game to defend against a penalty shot).

"If, however, the third goalkeeper is dressed and on the bench when the second goalkeeper becomes incapacitated, the third goalkeeper shall enter the game immediately and no warm-up is permitted."

I believe Bertuzzi used to be our emergency backup, although that could've been a joke. Who would it be now? Osgood, if he's in the building? Miller, in the hope he could emulate his big brother?

Holland.

Then he can play behind the defense that he's assembled over the years.

Thanks. I never heard of that rule. I'm doubting most teams give a hoot about finding the right guy to designate, because this comes up so rarely.

They might have to trade for a goalie for the stretch run if Lou can't go. Trades are still allowed, the players traded for just can't play in the playoffs.

Fur reals? I can't recall that type of trade ever happening

Babs said they'd go with Bedard or Holland (I assume he's joking about Kenny). http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2015/03/04/babcock-hopes-new-line-lights-fire-jurco/24379497/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

The best part of the article, though:

The most popular choice among the Red Wings as to who would volunteer to play goalie – several Panthers did in their game – was Brendan Smith.

"He's pretty competitive and he seems to be good at everything," Justin Abdelkader said. "He'd volunteer himself."

Babcock was a bit more hesitant about Smith.

"Yeah, yeah, just work on getting out of your zone," Babcock said.

Doesn't that mean it has to be somebody else? Meaning, someone that was scratched. What does "any available goalkeeper who is eligible" mean? What constitutes eligible? I'd assume they'd have to be under contract...

It means that no skater on the roster can wear the goalie pads unless both goalies are incapacitated, then it's permitted (it's confusing wording for sure). Though I also would like to know what qualifies an "eligible" goalkeeper? Do they have to be under contract in some way? I recall something a few years back about a high school kid being an emergency goalie for a day for some team (Buffalo maybe, not sure), and I think they had to sign him first.

Anyone have insight on that part of the rule?
