Nyquist's RFA Status

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

So, I was having a discussion with a friend of mine regarding Detroit's restricted free agents (ones who could make the team next year) - how much each would cost and the term they would receive. We disagreed over Gus' RFA status. My interpretation is that Nyquist would still be RFA if he signed a one-year deal, but not two years.

He's 25-years-old and his birthday is September 1st, which means he would be a RFA in 2016-17, but not 2017-18. So they could sign him for one year, and he'd be still be RFA next offseason, but not the following one. This seems simple to me, but I could be wrong? In the 2017 offseason, he would be 27... thus qualifying for UFA status, right?

"Any Player who either has seven (7) Accrued Seasons or is 27 years of age

or older as of June 30 of the end of a League Year, shall, if his most recent

SPC has expired, with such expiry occurring either as of June 30 of such

League Year or June 30 of any prior League Year, become an Unrestricted

Free Agent."

Edit: Can a mod fix the title? Sorry.

If he signs a one year deal he'd be RFA again. There is no reason for him to accept a one year deal though, and I doubt Detroit would want to do that either. If they do and he has another big year, his salary would go up. Nyquist and his agent will want 2 years, so he can be a UFA as soon as possible, Detroit will push for longer term, and I think he'll end up signing for 4-5 years at $5 mil per.

I'm of a similar mindset - my guess was/is a four-year deal worth 4.2-4.5 per. My buddy brought up Z's deal after his ELC (I think it was 2.4 or 2.8 million, right?), and Tatar's bridge deal. I don't think it's the same situation, especially considering he's only got a year of RFA status and not two.

He should get Tatar money + contract

Tatar has been much better than nyquist and IMO Ive always felt like he would be, but Nyquist's ceiling is probably higher. Gus doesn't seem capable of playing against top opposition right now

A bridge deal like Tatar's isn't going to work here. That would actually put the team in a bad position.

Nyquist might want 2-3 years, but no way management does. As DD mentioned, Gus wants to get to UFA status as soon as possible. He's an unrestricted free agent after this deal, anyway. Might as well try to get him to sign for 4-5 years at a reasonable cap hit - anywhere from 4-4.5 million (good chance he'll try for 5). There's no chance in hell he signs for 2.75 million. I'll eat my socks if Gus signs for less than 4 million.

mvanpop... 6M for 8 years?... I hope that's a joke...

Yeah sorry I thought I wrote it sarcastic enough but if you could get him for 4.5-5 for long term that definitely would become a deal in about 3 years if the cap continues to rise

I'm sure he'll head to Tampa next

That's funny cause I was cruising the Tampa forums the other day because of how flips points have fallen off recently (last time I checked they were saying he was the best 2nd center in the game and even would be a great 1st center and how underrated he is) and they were all ragging on flip about his pass mentality, and how soft he is, some were even saying, I can see what wings fans were complaining about now... Lol I find it funny that he is not being hailed as the second coming anymore.

Also before the season started they were saying he would get 70 points this year. Lol

But imagine if we had him now instead of Weiss.. I'd be more optimistic about a playoff run that's for sure.

If Weiss was given the same opportunities and length of leash that flip got, he would be a much more integral part of our team. Weiss could get a hat trick and two assists on the 4th line and 10 minutes ice time and the next game only gets 7 minutes. The guy is playing well cause the coach won't show him any confidence or give him a real chance to shine. He gets put with grinders and pk'ers

I was thinking that to.. Maybe if Babs leaves we'll be better off he's a great coach but is he the best fit for OUR team? I want him to stay but at the same time I won't be furious if he leaves
