Helmer's baby is as fast as his daddy

Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, but his lightning-quick speed wasn't enough on Monday when his girlfriend Devon gave birth in the backseat of the couple's car.

The baby, now named Rylee, was born on the I-96 midway to the hospital, which was a big surprise to Helm, according to The Detroit News.

"After the game I was in bed around 10:30 or 11, pretty tired after the game (Sunday), and she kind of woke me up and said things were happening real fast. It came on so quick. We thought we'd have some time to get to the hospital," remembered Helm.

"The baby was ready to come out and say hello, and that's what she did."

Helm has 13 goals and 16 assists for a Red Wings squad that currently sits third in the Atlantic Division with 89 points.

Come on, Helmer, 2 kids by a baby mama. That's so NBA.

I have 2 kids from a "baby mama". But is because we don't feel the need to get married. Although I wish I was a baller. ;)

NBA would be 8 kids with 7 baby mama's or is that NFL... I cant keep up.

They were joking on the fan this morning and if you work at a car wash pray that you don't see Helm pull up.

All kidding aside I am happy for Helm and the new addition.

Ha, my first thought was they saved on delivery room, anesthesia, IV's, physician fees, etc.

It had never occurred to me that it costs money to give birth at the hospital. I'd have it in my car too.

Happy for Helm, I like her name.

Haha.

For some reason I don't think he's worried about the money.

And I hear giving birth hurts.

Get the epidural.

Maybe get it to go if you're deadset on having it in your car....

And maybe lay down some plastic.
