Is A First Round Exit Imminent?

I think the difference with this team and the other teams we had with terrible stretches is that we just arent that good.

We stole points with heroics probably 7 times in the first 30 games. That was clutch as ever, but it has to be mentioned.

The cup winning teams had the best roster in the NHL and we knew it. Everyone else knew it. Do you really see a cup contending team when you watch us play?

The Wings have like nine shootout losses too. Even four more wins and they are well within the playoffs and fighting for home ice.

I don't think "everyone knew" that Detroit had the best roster then. The argument could definitely have been made, though, I'll agree (and not as much so this year, probably). No, I don't see a cup contending team when I watch the Wings play right now. I see a team playing in the regular season. I'm actually going to wait and see what happens in the playoffs, though, myself.

We shall see. The playoffs are a whole different season.

Seriously, how many of you thought that the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings would get swept by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 1st round of the 2003 playoffs, or lose in the 2nd to the Calgary Flames in 2004, and to the Edmonton Oilers in the 1st round in 2006?

In 2006, they steamrolled through the regular season with 58 wins, and then looked flat as day old beer in their 1st round playoff series against Edmonton.

With that said, I don't put much stock in the regular season...

I agree with you, but with that said Roloson stood on his head for the Oilers. Something Howard never seems to do in the playoffs.

These next two games will be the wings I think we can expect in the playoffs. Games right now, the way the standings are, against Ottawa and Boston should have a playoff atmosphere. If we can't get up and play our best for these games, playoffs are going to be rough.

That said, I think they'll come out and play a hard 60 min each game, get a couple W's, and ride that momentum right into the post season.

We lost all those series because of hot goaltending and because our opponents played a tight checking, physical game and battled hard.

This team can't do any of those things. We're a poor man's puck possession team.

Roloson's playoff numbers - http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/r/rolosdw01.html#stats_playoffs_nhl::none

Howard's playoff numbers - http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/howarja02.html#stats_playoffs_nhl::none

But keep believing that ONE single year was indicative of Roloson's overall body of work - hint: it wasn't.

I never said it was his body of work, I meant it as Roloson stood on his head against the Wings that year, something Howard has never done in a series.

Howard was a big factor in beating Anaheim but I agree he's not often outplaying the opposing goaltender i.e Niemi

Yeah, He was big against the Ducks and against the Hawks, but sometimes I wish he would get that one step more, like a lot of goaltenders seem to do in the playoffs. I feel like people on here think I'm bashing Howard, I'm not, I hope he gets us a cup one day, but damn, he is just average in the playoffs most of the time. Gotta be more than average. He shouldn't have to stand on his head in the playoffs, it is a team game, but sometimes the goaltender has to carry the team and stand on his head.

I think the point was that Roloson hadn't done that before either and he wasn't a better goaltender than Howard is. So, your use of Roloson as an example arguably points toward it being at least as possible for Howard to play that well.

One and done I'm afraid, if we get in that is. If we have everyone back and can stay healthy we could give Someteam a 6/7 game series. But as we stand and are currently playing then it could be a sweep.

If we get swept, we need to make huge changes. Average team at best, the worst thing an NHL team can consistently do is be a fringe playoff team because we don't get high picks.

This is all happening while we have two of the best players in the world...once theyre gone I hate to see how rough we might be

Im sure most will disagree, but we basically got swept last season as well and showed nothing to Boston. As it looks right now, we may get swept again but who knows.

We're not getting swept. I'll put money on it. How quickly so many lose faith when the team hits a rough patch. I won't be surprised to see us make the conference finals.

Personally, I could see this team make it all the way or get swept in the 1st round theyre just extremely inconsistent.

I guess it depends on what team shows up, alot of variables are set in place

its not a case of losing faith with the team, on current form or should i say result's we will struggle to go further than the first round. Hopefully we'll have a full roster to pick from for our last 3 games next week. Im hopeful we can win both these weekends games and then i think that will be enough to secure the post season berth, but being realistic i cant see us getting anything at the Wild today and maybe if we can put a full 60 versus the Caps we could get 2pts.
