Defense matters, especially to Babs. He's had some cringe worthy giveaways, including one earlier in the game. He's not a kid and doesn't put up enough points on a consistent basis to overlook that.

I'd argue that he absolutely DOES put up enough points. Again, he's on a 40 points pace despite playing 9 minutes a night at even strength. That's not too shabby. Plus, we've got a team full of "defensive forwards", I've heard about Babs' shot suppression system until I want to puke, and we still lose games because we can't score 5 on 5. I don't think it would kill us to put guys in positions to make plays.

But your points are taken. Offense is an ancillary part of Babcock's game plan, and so a more offensive guy has less value...until he's Teemu Pulkkinen. .

You're using a pretty meaningless points projection and ignoring the 2 minutes per game Weiss spends on the PP.

I honestly had no opinion of Weiss when he came here and didn't know what the deal was when he couldn't crack the lineup. But seeing him get to play a good chunk of games, the guy is a turnover machine. If someone actually timed puck possession, I bet Weiss would be at or near the bottom for forwards.

Like I said, when he has time or space he can make nice plays. But as soon as he gets pressured, that puck is headed the other way.

Only 8 of his 24 points came on the PP. So it's not like that's inflating his stats. He scores 5 on 5 despite not spending a lot of time there. Which was my point. And I think it's relevant considering our team is awful at scoring 5 on 5.

So it sounds like he's being utilized correctly. Especially given how often he turns the puck over.

He did pull a Franzen earlier this season in between his injuries when he put up a good portion of his goals/points. I want Weiss to do well, and if he's the guy that can help get the offense going, I'm all for it. But he came in here touted as solid defensively and as an offensive upgrade to Filppula, the #2 center the Wings have needed.

As I was saying in another thread, once you get in Babcock's dog house, it seems nearly impossible to get out.

I never really watched Weiss in Florida but he was so soft on the puck in a recent game I commented that I don't get how the guy was ever a #2 center. Then someone pointed out he was even a #1.

I just don't get it.

Injuries over the last 2 seasons could have really negatively impacted his game.

Only if you're using the faulty logic that more ice time automatically equals more scoring, and without the puck ending up in your own net.

Well his track record seems to suggest that with more ice time, he scores more. For our team, and for Florida. So I think it's at least a reasonable option. And it's not like we're playing so well that we should just keep doing what we're doing. It's probably worth considering a change when you've very nearly played yourself out of a playoff spot.

The Wings problem hasn't been scoring lately though as much as it's been brutal turnovers and missed defensive coverage.
