Buffalo clinches last spot

They're put up a good fight against the jackets but lost 2:4

Even if they win tomorrow and Arizona loses Buffalo has less rows so congratulations you are getting one of the 2 phenoms.

With that pick plus the deep pockets of Pegula this is going to be a very scary team soon and their fans deserve it.

Enjoy McEichel

Now that they have nothing to not play for, let's hope they come out to play tomorrow and beat the Pens. Though Boston will probably lose anyway...

Buffalo Sabres have been my long-time underdog team, one that I wish could have some success for the sake of their fans, especially. I have good friends who live there, great knowledgeable hockey fans - they deserve to have a team they can rally around and have some fun.

I feel like Edmonton has taught people nothing. Having a first or second overall pick, even if its for a projected "phenom" doesn't mean anything if you cant build your team the right way.

For every Crosby and Ovie, there is an Alexandre Daigle, Pat Falloon, Rick DiPietro, Patrik Stefan etc.

I think this is why each and every team should have the same chance of getting the 1st overall pick. I'd rather see the cup champion get the 1st overall pick, than watch a team do whatever they possibly can to tank. The current draft lottery provides incentive for failure.

Could you imagine a team winning the Cup then getting the #1 overall pick? I don't think that outcome is fair either (unless from the result of a trade).

More fun solution. Relegation, like the European Soccer/Football leagues have. Buffalo drops down to the AHL, the 2nd worst team gets the #1 pick, and the Calder Cup winner gets promoted to the NHL.

I know it's impossible to do so, and would be a logistical nightmare to implement, but it would bring a whole new twist to the concept of tanking for the best pick. It would still give even the worst teams reason to play to win.

No way you can ever make the process completely fair. The only reason it's such a hot topic this year is because there are two highly touted supposed franchise players. As Mickey says often, 18 year olds are a crap shoot. One player can help, but can't turn a pathetic franchise into a Stanley Cup Champion. How long did it take the Wings after getting Yzerman?
