Boston GM Peter Chiarelli fired

I think this move is a huge overreaction. Boston has been a cup favourite for years now, including 1 win, and one finals loss. Stupid "what have you done for me lately" move.

People reference his cap management, the Boychuk trade hurt them, but the guy had 1 year left on his contract and was about to be a UFA. Who knows what was said behind closed doors. Maybe Boychuk flat out said "I'm not re-signing"....who knows. Losing Iginla to me is not a big deal, the guy signed a 1 year deal. Its not like Iginla was a fixture on this team for years.

The Seguin trade is very suspicious. I have a strong feeling that there was influence/pressure for him to trade him by someone else (my guess JJ). He easily could have held on to Seguin and traded him for a much better package then he did. Just a weird one.

Just finished watching their presser it seems like there was a rift between Cam Neely and Peter Chiarelli. Chiarelli wanted a more "skilled" team while Neely (thankfully) wants to bring back the Big Bad Bruins. Even if Boychuck flatout said " I'm not re-signing" at least wait till the trade deadline and trade him then, I mean Franson, Winnik fetched first rounders Boychuck would have easily topped that and a first rounder in such a deep draft (even if it's a late one) is much better than two 2 rounders.

Iginla fit in perfectly his style is bruinslike and he was their best goalscorer (I think he scored 31 goals that year) so letting him go AND not replacing him means minus 60 points.

In terms of Seguin I fully agree with you, if a team wants to get rid of a guy that badly at least wait for a better offer..I mean Kelly and Ericsson ? Really that's a GOTM fleece by Neil. Just looked it up Chiarelli has 3 years left on his contract so he can sit at home, revisit the cons and pros of his GM days with the Bruins while collecting millions and then come back re-energized to GM another organization - not the worst outcome in the world I guess.

Leafs Lunch already discussed if he would be willing to come to Toronto I doubt it, a man of his resumee isn't going into a place where the Assistant GMs are already set and the VP is the de facto "main" GM.

I think if they held on to him they wouldn't have made the cap....though that is on Chiarelli, shouldn't have put them in that position.

Boston media made up stuff like him being late all the time (1 time actually *lol*), being too involved in partying and not doing enough on the ice (which is difficult if you are a rookie tasked with third line duties). I think the fans and management would have accepted that huge mistake but following that up with Iginla and Boychuck and people can say what they will about Shawn Thornton but that guy was beloved there (not only by the fans) I think taking those 3 guys out really changed the dynamics of that locker-room and maybe some players were (rightfully) pissed at Chiarelli.

That being said Chiarelli is a good and very smart man, he will land another job in no time

Umm just less than a week ago he got sat again for being late and missing practice....

I think it has more to do with all the bad contract extensions he's handed out. Lucic and Smith are particularly bad, and losing some of the other guys he's let go instead led directly to their sub par record.

I heard the owner and Neely are the ones who made him trade seguin for his off ice antics ... What has Neely done to deserve to be president besides being a bruins legend? I don't recall ever hearing him learning the ropes ? Those 2 clowns will keep bringing down the bruins

What high standards? They didn't make the playoffs. Maybe if we didn't make the playoffs Holland would be gone.

Don't know what the pizza-induced coma comment is about. You know that he's dealing with colon cancer. And, also, you know that Ilitch's son took over long ago.

Most people here would call this season a success. Most Boston fans wouldn't. And they only finished a few points behind us. That's why I'm saying they have higher standards. So did we at one time when we were Cup contenders. They've been Cup contenders for the last 5 years.

Holland would not be gone if we missed the playoffs. Ilitch will never fire Kenny. Neither will his son.

In playoffs, out of playoffs. A few points matter.

I agree that their standards were likely higher this season. They did win the President's Trophy last year, their standards should have been higher. Should have been Julien to get fired though.

Tbh who cares what Seguin did off the ice I would've traded Krejci, Bergeron and Seguin 1 2 punch up the middle could've won them many cups

If you assume Seguin would have emerged the same way if he'd stayed in Boston, they'd certainly be better off, though I don't know that I'd go as far as that. Too many variables in winning a Cup.

But in defense of the trade, keep in mind that Eriksson was an extremely good player in Dallas. Three straight 70+ pt seasons before a down year in 2013. And he was only 27 at the time I think. His failure to produce in Boston is what makes that deal so lopsided now. Two of Seguin's three seasons in Boston were less than impressive, so I don't think it's a given that he'd be producing the same way.
