Oilers hire Chiarelli for front-office position

Apparently since he still had three years remaining on his contract when Boston fired him, the Oilers may have to send them a compensatory pick.

Which makes absolutely no sense to me....

I can see this screwing over some gm in the future, especially one without his experience in building a Stanley cup winning team.

Boston has 2 options:

1. Take the puck but then they are on the hook for his remaining salary

2. Don't take the pick and not having to pay him his remaining salary

If either coach goes ends up going to Edmonton, watch up. Their center depth was already out of control. A good GM should be able at least pull them out of a bottom 5 spot. Although, there is still alot wrong with that front office.

Interesting coming from someone who traded Kessel and Seguin, although I don't think he would do it for McDavid. No one is untouchable.

Tuesday night, before Game 4 of the OHL Western Conference Finals, we had a chance to talk with new Edmonton Oilers GM and President of Hockey Operations Peter Chiarelli. He was in town to check out the downtown Erie scenery. Ok, in all seriousness, we know why he was in Erie.

The Oilers own the number 1 pick in the NHL Draft. Everyone in the hockey world is expecting them to pick Connor McDavid with the top pick. But we got to ask him directly, “Is there a scenario out there anywhere, in which you would consider trading the number 1 pick?”

“I would never say never,” Chiarelli told us. “If we decide to take this player, Connor McDavid, who is a hell of a player, we would be passing up a hell of a player if we did trade the pick. But in this business, you never say never.”

Remember that Craig MacTavish did say that he would never trade the number 1 pick. Could it be that Chiarelli is really contemplating any other possibility as this point? One would assume not, but hey, Tyler Seguin got traded, right?

“I am really happy to be part of a group that has a chance to take this player.” Chiarelli added, which prompted Erie Otters Beat Writer Victor Fernandes to ask, “So does this mean that you are taking Connor McDavid number 1?”, to which Chiarelli responded, “That’s not what I said.” They are at least letting the process work itself out.

Next time around is quite the opportunity. The chance to pick this generational talent is staring him and the Oilers right in the face. Is McDavid too good to pass up? Is there a trade out there that could happen? At least to Chiarelli, maybe. Least we have something to monitor from now until the draft.

I would offer the first overall to Buffalo for the 2nd overall pick, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Sam Reinhart.

Let's see how bad they really want Conner McDavid.

If they accepted I would then trade Ryan Nugent Hopkins for the best possible veteran top six center I could get (plus whatever else), sign a veteran depth centerman, and look to add one or two veteran defensemen in free agency.

All in all, leaving your organization with this as a future core:

Jack Eichel

Leon Draisaitl

Sam Reinhart

Taylor Hall

Jordan Eberle

Nail Yakupov

Rasmus Ristolainen

Justin Schultz

Oilers GM Craig MacTavish will be the 'No. 2 guy,' says Chiarelli

The new President of Hockey Operations and General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers has convinced demoted G.M. Craig MacTavish to stay on as Super Duper Chief Right Hand Head Man.

Even when the Oilers do something right like hiring Chiarelli, they still can't get it completely right.

Hopefully they're giving MacTavish a really nice office with a great view and a big desk he can put his feet up on and while away the hours while everyone else runs the team.
