Our last coach LOVES Andersson...

Pulk, Jurco and Nyquist (along with Ferraro and Jensen) are all RFA's right now. Nyquist will get the largest raise, but the others will come pretty cheap, get then all signed for 3 years. DD , Sheahan and Mrazek are RFA's in 2016. DD should get Quincey money at most, Sheahan will be modest. Mrazek will get at least $3M. He will cost us the most, but if he pans out to be our legit #1, Jimmy will eventually be traded, so that would open up $5M more. I know my wish list is a dream and I will most likely be disappointed, but I'd also be fine with one of Green or Franson and just keep Kindl or promote Marchenko. What if we land this Reilly kid? He won't go to GR, so I know that is even more Cap space gone. Heck, we may even land Hyman as an FA, he might spend some time in GR with Larkin. Abby and Helm will get raises for sure, but how much? I think they are forever $3M or less players...just my opinion.

I will still probably be disappointed...

Jackman is interesting, but he is lefthanded and I think if Kenny is going to spend big cash, it'll be for what he needs...but then again, he did want Phanuef...

Just not much in the UFA class atm. It will be interesting to see who else is let go. Right now just can't get worked up at all about any of these guys for long term big money deals. Which all will want.

Not sure if it's been mentioned.... but add a couple more names to the free agent market.

Marc Antoine Godin

Penguins have decided to go for a full youth movement on defense, won't bring back Martin and Ehrhoff. They'd rather invest on wingers.

Kronwall-Ehrhoff

Dekeyser-Martin

Quincey-Ericsson

An improvement?

Not really. Ehrhoff is on the decline, and was never really a top pair guy at the peak of his career. Martin would maybe be a step up in the top four, considering he's really versatile. But look at your top four, they're not particularly big, tough, or fast moving. They're just kinda average(ish). I think I'd rather have Q and E up there to be honest. At least they're strong on the boards.

I'm really not trying to rain on your parade, because I've liked both Martin and Ehrhoff for years. But that this point in their respective careers, I see them providing the most value in a role not unlike what Zidlicky did last year. Third pair guy and PP specialist. Any more responsibility and they'd get exposed. There's a reason Pittsburgh is letting them walk.

I'm not advocating the Wings sign both Ehrhoff and Martin. Personally I'd stick with Smith and Marchenko. But it sounds like Kenny would like to add at least 1 dman via trade or UFA.

I agree. I think he'd like to add someone as well. I think he'll probably poke around and see if he can get any bites in free agency, but the guys he'd want will probably be too expensive. So I think he'll see what Jeff Blashill thinks about the existing defense, and float a trade package based on the odd men out (Smith or Kindl most likely). And if that doesn't work, he'll stand pat, go with the kids, and revisit the defense question at the trade deadline.

Holland is risk averse. It's what makes him a steady GM. He's always going to play it safe. So those expecting big splashes for moderate talent (Green or Franson), or blockbuster trades, will always be disappointed. It's just not his style. He's got enough confidence in his farm club to play it safe and wait for the right deal...no matter how long that takes. And that's exactly what he'll do.

I think Kenny inquires about UFAs and trades. Its just that he will not overpay just for the sake of getting new players. He gets turned down by UFAs. Stralman would have looked good playing with Kronwall this past season.

I agree. The Red Wings aren't in dire straits, so there's not incentive for Ken Holland to offer big money for questionable talent. He's shown, in the past, that's he's perfectly willing to offer big money (and big trade packages) for proven, high end, talent. But recently the money hasn't been enough, and he's been turned down. No fault on him for that.

Stralman is a good player. And he's doing work for Tampa, no doubt. But people forget that when he was signed, a lot of folks criticized Yzerman for overpaying. Just like they criticized him for the Carle signing too. It was by no means a slam dunk FA signing, and wasn't noticeably different than our own signing of Quincey. For Kenny to have beaten Tampa's offer he'd have had to go higher, and that carried considerable risk given that Stralman did not have a proven track record of success prior to arriving in Tampa.

It also helps that he's playing with Viktor Hedman each game. Stralman did play well with the Rangers last season. He was paired with Staal most nights. So he is a good dman but he plays with good players. If Kenny does add a dman I think it will be via trade. The UFA class doesn't impress me at all. But who does Kenny trade for? Yandle? The Rags gave up highly touted Duclair for him so they will likely want a blue chip prospect and a 1st round pick in return. Too much to give up for a player with only 1 year left on his contract. Maybe Bouwmeester in St. Louis? Kenny had interest in him before back when Jay Feaster was Flames GM. The Blues have to shed some salary to lock up Tarasenko long term. I don't know if JBO is on the block. He might be a good fit on the Wings. The Blues have Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk making big bucks.

If they can't get someone who is a legitimate update, and that doesn't mean a little better or just plain different, then there is no need to bring in a free agent or make a trade. Honestly, I don't see much in free agency. A bunch of second pair guys, most of the best whom are older and/orcoming off injuries, and none of them are really much better than the guys we have now projected to be in the top 4.

Agreed, he'd like to but I don't know if any one out there will fit the term/money that we should spend on them for the quality we'd be getting back.

Franson and Green interest me but only at reasonably priced 2 or 3 year deals and they'll likely want longer term.. I'm sure someone will offer it to them too.

Martin is a top pair defender. He's a big minute guy who could take some or the workload off of Kronwall. Same age as Kronwall (34). He would definitely be an upgrade for the top pair over Ericsson. Probably will get too much money, though, and I wouldn't want a deal more than 3 years.

It's funny how within the last year or so people were pretty bummed out about not landing Franson, Green, Erhoff, etc and now that everyone is available again the consensus on LGW so far is "meh"

I wouldn't mind adding someone who can be a steady offensive presence, though.

I want to see the Wings sign Martin, that chicago kid Reilly and Hyman, let smith walk trade Quincey and let Zids walk

Actually scratch that, no Martin.

Let the kids and Mike battle for spots, yes the d-core would be a bit young but they all could be paired with an experienced defenseman

I think Franson is underrated, due to him being a healthy scratch at times with Nashville. The Preds are loaded on the back end, so it was hard for him to crack a lineup that was hot before the trade took place. They struggled after the trade but it would be foolish to believe Franson had anything to do with that. He's a really good defenseman and in my opinion is exactly what this team needs. His value is at an all time low right now and it would be a great time to pick him up.
