DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted August 3, 2015 Mrazek and Howard are going to fight for the top spot. Howard has a track record of being at the very least a good starter, Mrazek has a lot of potential. Howard also has a history of bad stretches and isn't an elite level goalie, and Mrazek was inconsistent last year and there have been a lot more young goalies who were flashes int he pan than developed into star goalies. There are pros and cons for both.
amato 3,210 Report post Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) Would anyone be surprised if Blashill 'favored' Mrazek considering the time spent together in GR? As long as he's playing well, no I wouldn't be surprised. If Howard is out playing mraz though and mraz is getting more starts, then I'd be surprised. kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted August 4, 2015 Blashill isnt going to 'favor' people because he played with them and screw the older players over. Thats would unprofessional and ridiculous. He will be a fair coach. Jimmy and Mrazek will be competing for it with a slight edge to Jimmy to start the season seeing as though he takes 5 mill to be on ice. marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted August 4, 2015 In the end, this team will never win with Howard as the starter. The sooner Mrazek becomes the undisputed #1, the better off we all are. Howard gave us stability in goal during the rebuild. I am thankful for that. He is good enough to rack up some great regular season numbers, but his weaknesses become amplified in the playoffs. 1 F.Michael reacted to this
kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) I'm not a Jimmy fan but rejog your memories that Jimmy had all star goalie type stats before he was injured in second part of season. If he's healthy this start of season, Blashill would be dumb not to see if he can replicate those stats again. Edited August 4, 2015 by kickazz
number9 3,297 Report post Posted August 4, 2015 I have no clue what waiver options he has, but they might as well send Mraz back down to GR just to get some starts. It's gonna be the Jim Howard show as soon as the season starts.

kipwinger 8,522 Report post Posted August 4, 2015 I think that a lot of the success attributed to Howard AND Mrazek really belongs to Babcock's shot suppression system. I'm not saying that either guy wouldn't be good otherwise, but it's pretty clear that they didn't get challenged nearly as much as most goalies do. I think I'd wait to see how things pan out under Blashill before I start penciling in starting goalies. Might be that Howard stink worse than we thought, and Petr easily takes the job. Then again, maybe Mrazek falters under more shots every single night and the veteran is our saving grace. It's gonna be the Jim Howard show as soon as the season starts. That won't happen. We'd lose him if he were on waivers. I think it's silly to assume that the #1 tag belongs to either one at this point. Howard has the experience and Mrazek is surely held in high regards by Blashill. Unless an injury takes one of them out or one severely under-performs, there's no reason to believe that they won't split starting time. 2 F.Michael and Jesusberg reacted to this

I could be remembering that wrong but he seemed to steal a couple games here and there. At any rate, I'm excited to see what blashills effect on every part of the team is. should be an exciting season 1 krsmith17 reacted to this
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted August 5, 2015 I agree, Mrazek is definitely the type of goalie that thrives under pressure, and is at his best when he faces a ton of rubber.

I almost feel like Petr needs to look better during training camp/preseason to get the first starts, but ultimately they're going to split the first 20 games pretty evenly. Basically, I think Howard starts the first game or two of the year, but Mrazek is going to be given a chance very early and run with it. As long as Petr or Howie don't play themselves out of starts, it's going to be a balanced schedule for both guys, IMO.
