What is all this talk about waiving Mrazek? You are too funny! The Jimmy Howard Show? Get bent...that showed "jumped the shark" two seasons ago. I believe that Jimmy will NOT be a Red Wing past the deadline or next summer. His time here is over.

Waive Mrazek....WTF, you are the same folks still waiting for 2008 Franzen to make a return...

Two seasons ago? Howard just put up terrific numbers before he got hurt last January. At worst, Howard will be half of a really solid goalie tandem this season. Let's not forget Mrazek was wildly inconsistent during his regular season starts. Howard is a valuable piece still for this team.

Don't let the title confuse you. This is a Howard vs Mrazek/ trade Howard/ waive Mrazek thread

Well it should be taken to an appropriately titled thread. It's annoying how every thread turns into some s***show about the goaltending situation or Franzen. I know it's the offseason, but some people here want to discuss things besides the Wings.

Yeah. Jimmy is the best goalie in the league. He would have won the Vezina last season if he wasn't injured. Mrazek for a 6th round pick is what I'm thinking. He is too inconsistent. Jimmy has demonstrated years of dominance and playoff supremacy. Mrazek is not good enough to steal the starting job away from Jimmy. Trade him now before his value decreases and the rest of the NHL realizes how much he sucks.

It's really that simple

What is failed to been realized here is, its really not whether or not Mrazek is better than Jimmy (which he is) its the fact that the Red Wings cannot and will not have two goalies on the roster making $5M each after this season...when considering the future and the talent/age of each player, Jimmy will be the one to be dealt, not Petr.

...so anyway, UFA's still be signed, I guess Franson still has a chance!

What makes you think Ken Holland is going to give Mrazek $5M dollars on his next deal? Generally speaking, young, back-up goaltenders entering their prime have been given anywhere from 1.0-3.0M. The only goaltenders in Petr's age range who have bucked that trend lately are Bobrovsky and Holtby, who I don't see as comparable at this stage. I think the MOST he'll be given somewhere in the 2.5M range over a couple seasons, perhaps lower if he signs for less term. Don't think we'll be looking at bigger money until 2018-19 or 2019-20.

Complain about direction thread has taken... further comments continue to push thread further away from topic thread.

NEVER LET ME DOWN LGW.

NEVER.

LET.

ME.

DOWN.

On top of the big names that are still out there like Ehrhoff and Franson, it's amazing how many players are still out there.

Guys that normally would get snapped up are languishing on the sidelines for seemingly much longer than normal.

Or is it just me?

Seems like a lot of household names still available.

Are teams emphasizing building "from within" more now? Or will we see a ton of camp invites and signings in the next month or so?

Guess Franson and Ehrhoff really outpriced themselves

My guess is that Erhoff wants to stay with the Penguins (he did take that measly 1 mill deal to go there) Penguins probably prefer Franson, but he's asking too much and they're trying to deal him down, while Erhoff waits out the situation.

That's my assessment pulled directly out of my ass.

They probably are related, though. Teams would surely prefer the younger Franson and someone will take Erhoff once Franson's off the market

Exactly, I think teams are really taking a close look at who they've got in their system before they go out and spend a couple million on a player that may not add that much difference to their roster than what they've already got for a helluva lot cheaper.

Ehrhoff's deal last year was $4 million, not $1 million. Thru 'ye olde rumour mill', he's still linked to the Jackets, but they've got under $4 million worth of cap space to work with. Franson is rumored to end up in Boston, but they're all caught up in the numbers game as well.

With his off-ice legal issues, Stoll comes cheap at under $1-million for one year. Could end up being good redemption story.

Honestly though, just how much is Pitt a contender anymore? Ya, I know, injuries, but before our injuries last season, we were tied for 1st overall in the NHL, and most insiders don't/didn't consider Detroit a contender. That being said, I do think the additions (and subtractions) this summer makes Detroit a step or two closer to contending. Sure, the addition of Kessel makes the Pens a bit better up front, but they did lose some players that worked hard for that team, Kessel has never been accused of working hard. I can see players choosing Pitt over Detroit in todays NHL, but IMO, I don't think they are that much closer or we are that much further away from contending...plus its not like they have a ton of cap space either.

I am not saying anyone else is coming to Detroit, but I think there are plenty "better" teams out there that are closer to the Cup than Pitt, that Franson would be looking at (if he takes a cheap 1 year deal to win) before the Pens...The Ducks have over $12M in cap space with only 22 roster spots taken up...

Cody franson gets caught playing like a fourth forward, then when he gets caught out of position he doesn't have the speed to recover. He's also very bad positionally in the defensive zone. The weird part is he takes himself out of plays making hits until he's in his own end, in which case he helps the guy set up a tent in front of the net and leaves him to dig for garbage goals in peace.

When it comes to any discussion of Franson, I feel like it's important to remember that most analysis of him is in comparison to other defensemen in his salary range. He's definitely not a bad defender. He's probably better than 60% of all other defensemen out there. He's clearly a top four defender, and among those he's shown that he can score better than most. But he's also worse defensively, and his skating isn't great. But again, that's in comparison to other top four guys looking for 5+ million.

I think sometimes we focus so much on these guys' positive and negative attributes that we end up getting tunnel vision and fail to think about them in context. Cody Franson is a pretty good defenseman. He's not Brendan Smith or Jacub Kindl. He's like the inverse of Kyle Quincey. A top four guy who's a little worse than average defensively, and a little better than average offensively. His problem is that he thinks 30+ points per season puts him into Matt Niskanen salary range. Which it doesn't, given his limitations.
