This is a piece from the MLive article detailing the Wings salary cap for next season:

The Detroit Red Wings have 18 players signed for 2015-16 at a salary-cap figure of $56.75 million. The salary cap is projected to rise from $69 million to roughly $72 million.

The Red Wings will have ample room to sign their own restricted free agents and explore the free-agent market, which is extremely thin.

Here are their salary-cap figures for next season:

Forwards

Pavel Datsyuk $7.667 million

Henrik Zetterberg $6.083 million

Stephen Weiss $4.9 million

Johan Franzen $3.955 million

Tomas Tatar $2.75 million

Darren Helm $2.125 million

Justin Abdelkader $1.8 million

Drew Miller $1.35 million

Riley Sheahan $950,000

Luke Glendening $628,000

Restricted free agents: Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Jurco, Joakim Andersson, Teemu Pulkkinen, Landon Ferraro.

Unrestricted free agents: Daniel Cleary, Erik Cole.

Defensemen

Niklas Kronwall $4.75 million

Jonathan Ericsson $4.25 million

Kyle Quincey $4.25 million

Jakub Kindl $2.4 million

Danny DeKeyser $2.188 million

Alexey Marchenko $675,000

Restricted free agent: Brendan Smith

Unrestricted free agent: Marek Zidlicky

Goaltenders

Jimmy Howard $5.292 million

Petr Mrazek $738,000

Unrestricted free agent: Jonas Gustavsson.

I think it is safe to say that Gustavsson is not going to be re-signed. I think Cleary is a longshot as well, and unfortunately Cole probably will sit the entire season out of the NHL.

Zidlicky is a good question. He great in the first games he played with the Wings, but slowed and became a non-factor against TB. I think he may get a good offer from the Wings, but looking at the upcoming UFAs he will probably sign with a more desperate team with more money to spend. Smith will likely get a good offer, although I think we could do better with other options.

Nyq is almost an untouchable. Jurco, Andersson, and Ferraro could be used as trade bait, but would each demand something more than an aged vet and picks. Pulk is a future PP specialist and the possibility of him getting passed up is insane to me.

The biggest question mark IMO is Weiss. He has a big contract and small numbers. Is there a team that would bite the bullet and take a chance on him via a trade (assuming he lets it happen)? I think it would have to be a contender who maybe wanted one more piece to make the playoffs or advance past their early exit (LA, BOS, NYI, SJ) and have assets to send to us (D-men and/or secondary skill scoring).

Anyways, what is your opinion on what will/should happen (besides Babcock being the main story and priority signing).

The weiss and mule contract especially with his cuncussion now really hurts ... 9 mill wasted

Mule's salary won't count if he's on LTIR, so it's no concern. As much as I want to see Weiss do well, it's looking like he'll never really get back to how he was.

Wow Glendening is a steal at that price. They may give him a raise after this seasons playoff performance? Or are they locked in to early years players salary structure rules?

Helm-D-Tatar

Abby-Z-Nyquist

Franzen-Sheahan-Jurco

Miller-Glendening-Weiss

Pulkkinen

K-Big RIg

DD-Quincey

Smith-Marchenko

Kindl

I don't think there's many player's who are really question marks. Only really Zidlicky and Cole. I think Zidlicky is gone and Cole is only back if Mule is still on LTIR and, of course, only if he himself is healthy (I think both of those things are unlikely due to recent reports).

The only opportunities for changes up front are if we get a taker for Weiss. Then we could sign an UFA, but there's not much available. We'll look very similar in my opinion.

On D, I think we'll try to sign a high end RH UFA.

If we don't land one, we'll look for a trade. Kindl, Smith (he'll be re-signed for sure), Quincey, would all be pieces open to trade - Probably in that order. We also have Ouelette who looks ready. To me, it's just turning 2 (or even 3 if 1 is Kindl) of those 4 players into the elusive high end RH offensive Dman. We can also add to the pot with depending on the situation. I really feel that something will happen on D next year.

I think Mule is the biggest question mark going ahead (besides Babs). The Wings have no idea what his status is at this point so even though his salary doesn't count against the cap they lost a valuable player that they can't go out and replace.

I think Zidlicky and Cole are done with the Wings.

I can see Weiss and Smith for Phaneaf happening.

Goose has a lot to prove at the NHL level still IMO. I hope Kenny goes short term with him.

I think the Wings need to address a need for more scoring. Z isn't getting it done anymore, Tatar and Goose run hot and cold, and Pav can't shoulder all the weight.

Id like to see a lot less money in the press box next year.

Mule's contract doesn't count towards the cap while he is on injured reserve. His contract does not hurt the team what so ever if he cant play.

Might prevent us from getting someone incase mule comes back so we don't get handcuffed?

Haaa can't believe I wrote that ... Holland getting someone in the off season lol

Interesting to note that we have six RFAs and just five open roster spots although if Franzen stays on LTIR we could sign all six. I think Andersson is closest to being on the bubble. Ferraro, amazingly, seems as if he is and should be in our plans as a fourth-liner. Never expected that to happen. No room for Zidlicky.

It isn't Weiss's fault they have him so much money and wasn't played. Up until he became a turnover machine he was someone who should've had way more minutes.

He was good, got paid and it didn't work out. Not much more to it, sometimes signings just don't work out. But no I disagree that he should have gotten more minutes. He wasn't competitive in enough battles to warrant extra playing time.

We'll be in amazing cap shape if we can shed Weiss and Kindl. Even if we can't its still pretty stellar.

Great job Holland.

Only way to get rid of Weiss's contact is to take on an equally bad one.

Am I sensing some sarcasm?

I never get where this perception comes from. Yes, we didn't bring anyone new in from outside the organization last off-season, but..

2013:

Weiss, Alfie, Glendening

2012:

Coliacovo, Brunner, Tootoo, Gustavesson, Samuelsson,

2011:

Conklin, Commodore

2010:

Modano,

etc...

Except for glendening's break out year this season and proving his worth to the wings every single one of Those signings were a bust

Maybe minus alfredsson but he was at the end of his career

Ha agreed. Sometimes its just nice to step away for a bit and come back cooled down with a clear head.

I was gonna take a break after the demoralizing loss, but got sucked back in. Sigh. Is it October yet?

Can we all just agree that the players he has picked up in the offseason lately have been poor decisions?

They've been boom or bust pick ups, much like his drafting. Fortunately for us he's better at drafting.
