@DetroitRedWings no longer interested in pursuing a trade for @MapleLeafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf, I was told.

Thank god.

I wonder if the high asking prices are Babcock wanting to keep some semblance of a team, or if they're just overvaluing everybody.

I would like to see Kenny work that Old Holland Magic and make a couple sneaky-shrewd moves that pay off in a major way and, in turn, make him look like a total genius.

I like Alex Chiasson, who could be had for peanuts and/or lint.

I like Alex Semin, who could be had for Andersson and [insert players who make us wish that amnesty buyouts were still a thing, e.g. Weiss, Kindl, Ericsson].

I like Dustin Byfuglien, who would be the best (or an extremely close second-best) defenseman on this Wings team and could be acquired for substantially less than his true trade value. (The catch being that he has only a year left on his contract and that he will most definitely Get Paid next summer. Would we be able to pay him? Hard to say. Would it be worth it? Also hard to say.)

I like Mike Green, who could be had for only money. (I think Byfuglien is the better high-scoring, right-shooting, smooth-skating, 30-year-old American defenseman who "can't play defense and sucks." But if he's going to cost us a really good asset - say, Jurco or Pulkkinen - and then demand $7.5M x 6 years...Mike Green might be the better option. Unless Mike Green demands $6.5M x 5 years, in which case...well, there are plenty of other defensemen I like.)

I like a lot of players. I don't buy this "Well, in terms of trades, Phaneuf is pretty much the only realistic option, and we're not interested in him, so I guess we're standing pat" mentality. There are always deals out there. The Sharks got Brent Burns and a second-round pick for Devon Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle, and a first-round pick. Don't tell me "There's no hockey store" or "It takes two to dance." (And don't tell me it's all about getting more out of our young players when Cleary is still in the picture.)

Imagine a line of Tatar-Datsyuk-Semin. Imagine DeKeyser paired with Byfuglien and Kronwall paired with Quincey or Marchenko.

This team is a couple additions away from being really, really good.

I'd like for us to get Tyler myers tomorrow, then if we didnt include #19 in the deal then trade back with our pick to get two of svechnikov,Joel Eriksson ek, kylington, meloche, Roy, zboril, whoever's there.

And then try to get rid of weiss to someone like Arizona, and taking back no salary in the deal.

I've said before we should use Howard in a deal to get that top D we need. I just get the feeling that Kenny won't pay the price to get any of the top ufa D that are out there, so unfortunately the D ain't gonna change any despite of all the bull Kenny has been sprouting about the need to upgrade our blue line.

Mrazek looks like the future....but we don't know how well Mrazek will play over the course of a full NHL season. Howard is coming off an injury plagued, inconsistent year, but I'd still rather have him ready to step in and play as the number 1 if Mrazek falters. Let the season play out...hopefully they both play up to potential and then you can look at moving Howard and finding a solid back up.

Howard will be worth much more if he's playing like an all star with only three years left on his deal than he is now

Re: Trading Howard...

Hell no. Unless it makes perfect sense for us.

This is a two-goalie league; if you want to win the Cup, a 1a-1b tandem is pretty much a prerequisite (unless you have a perennial Vezina candidate who's durable as hell and consistently excellent). Look at what Darling did for Chicago. Look at what Vasilevskiy did for Tampa. Look at what Talbot did for New York. Look at what Hammond did for Ottawa. Hell, look at what Ozzie did for us in 2008. Hasek faltered (as designated starters are wont to do), and we needed a starter-caliber replacement. If Ozzie is instead some random backup, do we win the Cup that year?

Howard-Mrazek would and will be one of the league's best tandems (if not the best), and it'll cost us a combined cap hit of, like, $7M. It's pretty much an ideal situation. Howard was an All-Star last season (pre-injury, of course) and his "backup" is a prodigious stud. They'll push each other, bring out the best in each other. It'll be great.

For the first time in foreverrrrrr, I'm not the least bit concerned about the talent in net.

Looks like the lineup gonna look something like this ....

Zetterberg datsyuk abdelkader

Tatar richards nyquist

Pulkkinen sheahan Franzen

Helm glendening miller

Extras

Jurco Ferraro Andersson Callahan

Kronwall Ericsson

Dekeyser green

Quincey Smith/marchenko/ouellet/kindl

I'd personally rather replace Franzen with jurco

I agree with the Franzen idea, I just don't think, unless he is as healthy as a newborn baby, that he should even step on the ice in full contact participation. I'd also switch Tatar and Z. I think Tatar will shine even more with Pav. Plus Z and Nyquist have a great chemistry together, Gus seems to have a better confidence out there with Z and he seemed to get the majority of his points while playing with him.

I am not sure if this deserves its own thread, if someone wants to make one go ahead, but now that Holland seems to be done with UFA's and needs to focus on his RFA's, and when he signs them all, the roster is pretty crowded up front and in back. Especially at D. We have 7 NHL defensemen and 4 kids ready to come up. All 4 kids have exemptions and could all start the year in GR in needed. BUT! But Marchenko said that even though he doesn't want to be a whiner, he DOES NOT want to spend another season in GR. He may just opt for the KHL. We would still retain his contract and he would remain Red Wings property, and Blashill has already said that he love Jakub Kindl.

So this leads to my question and possible topic for a thread, with the log jam on this team, especially at D, who do we sacrifice? How much influence does Blash have on the personnel? Can Blash and Holland convince Marchenko to start in GR and he will be up within the year? I would think that Marchenko would be just as upset to come up here and be #7. We will have 15 forwards under contract not including Callahan who is out of exemptions. That makes 16 forwards to deal with...if Franzen in LTIR, still have ONE too many.

I would try to trade either Andersson or Callahan along with Quincey. FWIW, I think Kindl fits in better at D than Quincey at this point. I know that Q only has the one more year left on his contract and will gone after this year, but I just think Kindl fits in the program better. OF course Ideally, you get rid of two of them by next season in order to make room for the kids. I think one of Sproul or Ouellet gets traded because there just won't be any room for all 4 of the kids on the 16-17 roster with Smith re-signed here for 2 years. Not even enough room for 3, or even 2 if Kindl stays.

16-17 D roster

Kronwall-Ericsson

Dekeyser-Green

Smith-Kindl

If Kindl is traded you still only have 2 spots for 4 kids. Something has to give. Ideally if you want at least 3 out of your 4 kids on your roster in 16-17, you need to NOT re-sign Q, have Kindl and another traded (Smith or Ericsson.) I honeslty think if they traded Ericsson, Quincey this summer and promote Machenko and Jensen, they would have a better D NOW and not have to deal with all 4 at once next season.

Kronwall - Green

Dekeyser - Marchenko

Smith - Kindl

Jensen(Sproul)

I still believe that one of the kids will be packaged, although we have no room for more players, but if we got one essential part or a few assets, it may work.
