Jim Devellano on Mantha's play: "Very disappointing"

Calling him out like that is 1. Unnecessary and 2. Embarrassing guy came back after a broken leg and went into his first pro season. Heck I'd trade Nyquist, Tatar before trading Mantha guy has the size and skill to become a power forward.

I think you missed the part where he's softer than guys who are under 6ft. Tatar has way more tenacity than he does.

But big is beautiful these days right?

Recent public comments by Jimmy D and Babcock about our future have been "very disappointing" to me. It's fine if they think Mantha was "very disappointing" and they aren't sure who's going to replace Pavs, but don't say it to the media.

True, but we have to remember. Kenny prefers his forwards to be 5-10/180 and from docile socialist countries.......LOL. This makes it easier for him to make a trade for a 37+ year old pending UFA.......

I don't agree with calling out a player publicly whether it be in the NHL or AHL. I think there's better ways of lighting a fire under his ass like making him a healthy scartch for a game or two and let him battle for his spot. I think there's more of a chance of causing bad blood between him and the organization by calling him out. Anyway I'm not worried about his slow start, the kid is a stud with a bright future

I don't know that he prefers that, it's just your best chance at getting a steal late in the draft. He did try to get Phaneuf, arguably the best D man on the trading block (besides Yandle I guess) he just likely didn't want to give too much, which is good.

Wouldn't then a player with size the better bet ? I mean if he doesn't work out skillwise you can still use him as a grinder/checker ?

I hope the Leafs and Wings meet somewhere in the middle and get this deal done, it would benefit both clubs. If Holland adds a little sweetener and the Leafs give up a bit on the asking price it should be doable.

They want someone who already has the skill, hoping they'll bulk up (like Datsyuk), because size can be added after they're drafted, but it's less likely the skill will be.

That being said, the last draft they certainly focused on size, and centers.

That's actually a good point but it goes both ways, someone who already has size will bulk up even more. I mean sure if gems like Pasha are available, size isn't even a question because that guy has magic hands and an unbelievable work ethic.

Jimmy D needs to be put out to pasture. Mantha had a rough year but from reading about his play (haven't seen him play yet) he's not playing badly. He's just sort of average. That tends to happen with prospects one of their years. Very unusual for a prospect to be called out after one year.

Devellano wants Kenny to trade Mantha to his favorite team Maple Leafs. That is why he is saying this things. Clarification: Devellano's favorite Maple Leafs.

Mantha responds (quite professionally too) :

Mantha didn't dodge that after the Griffins eliminated the Marlies.

"Personally, I think I underachieved a little bit," he said. "Obviously, I would have liked, say 50, 60, 70 points. That was my goal at the start of the season. Obviously, I didn't achieve that, but it's not over.

"I could have a great impact in the playoffs. Who knows? Only one goal could make a difference between winning a series or not. A block shot, one-on-one battles. It's not over and I want to show them I can still play great hockey."

"I need to work on my strength, for sure," he said. "I need to work on a lot of aspects of my play, like getting quicker on my skates ... I got better as the year went along but I need to keep growing for the summer."
"Obviously, I would have liked to score my first shift, first game but that's always the way it goes," he said of his start to the playoffs. "I just need to keep pushing and play even harder."

edit: also from that article, holland's thoughts on Mantha's season....

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, when asked about Mantha, said his future will be determined by how he reacts to this season.

"I think he's going through adversity," Holland said. "And I think when you (face) adversity in life and learn to deal with it, you become a better person and a better player. I'm sure he expected to score a lot of goals down here.

"Lots of players down here (in the AHL) are going to be in the NHL in the next couple years. What he knows he has to do is go home and hit the gym hard in the summertime. You got to come to training camp in September determined that you're not getting a conversation that you're going back to Grand Rapids. And if you do, you build upon what you've done."

Wow, not sure what you guys are complaining about. The rest of the league passed on him because he is a known slacker. We thought we found a gem, but what a surprise, he's a slacker. So yes, after high hopes it's very very disappointing.

He's obviously the type of guy you need to bust all the way down to nothing, before you can build him up to his potential. Chances are he'll never play hard enough in NA, so he'll make a decent living playing in Europe.

I sure hope I am wrong, but Im not.
