Babcock granted permission to talk to other teams

Clarify this for me because I'm seeing mixed things about this on the internet:

Do we get a 3rd round pick if a team ONLY "talks" to him early. Or

Do we get a 3rd round pick if a team "talks" AND signs him once his contract is over?

Talks AND signs with that team. That would be great though. Can you imagine 10-3rd round picks!!

Pretty sure the 3rd round pick is at the discretion of the buyer, so to speak, with regards to it being in this years draft, next years, or the following.

He's as good as gone in my view. If he wanted to stay why look at what others have to offer, may look a classy move by the Wings but it's less than classy by Babcock by actually doing it. Give Blashill the gig and tell Babs the contract offer is off the table. We can then move on with a good young up and coming coach who knows first hand what we have in the minors and won't be unsure as how to use them.

Nothing wrong with looking at options in life. Sometimes people need assurance before they decide to stick with something or even to move on.

If you were offered a job at say Google and you currently work for Apple, there's no one who wouldn't at the very least look at what benefits Google has to offer even if they're content at working where they're at. Babcock is doing what any normal person in his position would do. He's weighing his options. Nothing classy or classless about it.

Also I'm not sure why people are assuming Blashill is somehow the better option when not even the organization itself does. Sure he's worked with the AHL roster but so has Babcock. For 10 years now actually. That's longer than Blashill.

If babs stays, the Wings organization gets what it wants. If not they will interview Blashill. Nothing more or less to it.

It sounds like Holland said he will match any offer, the only way to get Holland to match a high offer is to get a high offer.

the fact he is looking at other options to me means he is on his way. If you are happy in your job/work you dont go looking for alternative employment. Im not saying he shouldnt do it, it just sends me negative vibes that he'll be here next season. The wings front office have stopped any team from talking to Blashill which also sends the signal to me that they fear Babcock is on his way and they want Blashill as his sucessor. Babcock works with the AHL roster pre-season only so i dont see how that warrants 10 years!?, anyway im not here to argue mute points just expressing my feelings on the situation that has arisen. But if Babcock is still the Redwings head coach come Sept then ill be very surprised.

Blashill is off limits because the Griffins are still in the playoffs. Don't think it has to have anything to do with Babcock's situation.

Holland said it does. Don't have time to find the quote but he said if Babcock leaves he'll shake his hand and blash will definitely get an interview for the job so he is off limits till the whole coaching situation is sorted out

No it doesn't, not at all. Have you never negotiated a new salary and used comparison between companies before?

If your current employer offers you 3.5 million per year and another offers you 5 million per year. What are you going to do? Just accept the 3.5 million because you are "content" or "happy" where you are working. No, it's like Kickazz said, you explore other options, you go back to your employer and you explain, hey I can get 5 million from another company can you offer me a little more then the 3.5 million? Go from there.

You think that our actual roster can do better without Babs?!?!

I agree that we need changes... but ROSTER changes.

Obviously the good thing is all the Babcock sucks people will get their wish :-)

Yes, changes are needed but getting rid of the best coach in all of hockey - who has coached a very average team into the playoffs for 3 seasons in a row - is the wrong thing to do..roster, GM changes would have been needed. But hey, a few patchworks here and there and an inexperienced coach in his first NHL year will make this team a contender so what do I know.

In all seriousness I hope Babs can win a cup wherever he is going next sadly he didn't get the horses for another cup here.

Absolutely not accurate.

My personal situation - was on a fire dept. Ready to be chief, rode as chief when chief wasn't around. Got tired of waiting. Other chief opportunity came up at other department. Let my old chief know I was looking - common courtesy - not because I wanted to leave, necessarily, but because it was time to move up. Ended up not getting other chief spot but then old chief retired and I promoted into the position I wanted originally.

I didn't WANT to leave department #1, but I needed to test the waters to see what else was out there and to see if, in fact, I was as ready as I thought I was.

Babcock's not looking to get promoted, but why - after working this hard to be this ELITE as a coach - would you not want to stick your toe in the pool and at least see what the temperature was?

IMHO, it makes perfect sense.

Holland said it does. Don't have time to find the quote but he said if Babcock leaves he'll shake his hand and blash will definitely get an interview for the job so he is off limits till the whole coaching situation is sorted out

"Certainly Jeff Blashill is a legitimate candidate," Holland said. "I'm not going to grant anybody permission to talk to Jeff. They're in the playoffs, so they're going to play for another 10-12 days at least. I'm hoping Mike returns, but if Mike doesn't return certainly Jeff Blashill will be one of the people I'm going to want to interview."

And to you that sounds nothing like Holland not wanting to lose his backup plan if/when Babs leaves?

Two items that stick out in my mind.

1. Babs may be just getting this out of his system. Some people love to have their ego stroked. So maybe gallivanting across the globe to have a bunch of teams tell you how great you are, how much money they'll pay you, and how much power they'll give to you is exactly what is happening. May be a bad comparison, but my nephew applied to 5 of the top schools in the country (Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Yale, and Michigan). He was accepted by them all, but knew all along he was going to go to Stanford. I asked him why he applied to so many schools (I could understand one or two schools as back-up plan)...he told me "just for the peace of mind that I could get into any college I wanted".

2. I was a little put off by some of the comments Babs made at the end of the playoff presser. He basically said that no one thought they could make the playoffs this year, and the guys took a top team in the Bolts to the brink. Lame! We were top two teams in the league mid way through the season. Now we're looking for kudos cause we took Tampa to seven games?? That struck me as weak.

babs toured buffalo's facilities on sunday evening...

According to the Buffalo News, Pegula was part of Babcock’s tour, along with Sabres GM Tim Murray; the News also reported that the Sabres issued a “no comment” about its coaching search, and would continue to do so until the new bench boss was hired.

Babcock and Murray are familiar with one another, having worked together in Anaheim from 2002-04. Babcock led the upstart Ducks to the 2003 Stanley Cup Final, eventually losing in Game 7 to New Jersey.
