Babcock granted permission to talk to other teams

Many crappy players have their name on the Stanley Cup, as with coaches. Don Cherry was a bit before my time as a coach, so I can't comment on his ability to coach. He's an entertainer now and plays to his audience. I'm not going to judge him as a coach based on what he does now, not to mention he's like 182. But I find his advice on this subject to be sound and based on personal experience.

Its not bad advice at all, its just that he still found a way to mostly talk about himself in it which makes it funny.

And who better to give Mike Babcock advice than a guy who never won anything of note in his entire coaching career.

If you want advice on how to be a xenophobic, blowhard, dinosaur, ask Don Cherry. If you want advice on how to be a successful coach, ask somebody who has been one. John Tortorella and Marc Crawford were more successful NHL coaches than Don...so maybe start with them.

Yes, I'm sure Babcock would have outcoached those 1970's Montreal teams many times.

I can already see it. A line of Glendenning, Cleary and Miller would play 16 minutes a night to stop that top line of Montreal's.

Have you ever talked to me? Surely you don't think I was on here trying to make a point about how great Babcock is?

I'm just not sure that I'd think too hard about advice given by a guy who never won anything, only coached for six seasons, and is most famous for his off ice antics (including his super duper wacky outfits).

He's not altogether different from Lady Gaga. He's played one more game of professional hockey, has exactly as many Stanley Cups, and has a devoted fan following. I'd argue she has better taste, but they're not too far off otherwise.

I just feel like bringing back Babs is more status quo and that's the last thing the Wings organization needs right now. As good of a coach as Babs is, we need some fresh ideas and a new voice. The Wings are not going to fall off a cliff without him around -- they have won one playoff series in four years, so it's not like Blashill has some monumental task of taking over a juggernaut.

Sometimes a great coach just isn't the right fit for a team anymore and that's where I think Babcock stands at the moment. I won't be overly upset if he stays, but I do hope he moves on for the best of the organization going forward.

If it's really about that than a GM change should have been made when this team still had the chance to make The Captain Holland's successor or at least not lose Nill :(

I mean, I know the people who don't like Babcock and are thinking Blashill will just step in and work some "magic" why not bring in a fresh GM too and let Holland be the president of hockey Ops like more and more people are doing ? I think Ray Shero (GM) and Holland (VP) would have been such a great combo one is too conservative and the other guy too aggressive.

I mean changing the coach doesn't change the roster or philosophy but changing the GM and allow him to bring in his own guy with new ideas does.

im starting to hope Babs leaves just so everyone saying they want him gone finally realizes how important he is to this franchise.

Same here and then people will realize how hard it is to replace the best coach in hockey by far.

I mean Babcock got this team into the playoffs when most people were thinking they'd maybe contend for a top 10 draft pick

Most people?

Why doesn't someone set up a poll just to settle this among the fan base?

Stay

Go

Doesn't matter

I'd be curious as to the results. Want me to do it?

Aren't you my sock account?

I was just trying to explain why Cherry never won anything. He had some good teams in Boston, but those late 70's Montreal teams were just too good.

Yes, I will miss those first round playoff exits. They're so much better than missing the playoffs.

"It depends" should be one of the options. Like, will Holland be back too? I don't want both of them back again.

Blashill doesn't need to perform magic -- we aren't getting that right now anyways. There's always going to be a learning curve with a rookie coach, but how much worse off are the Wings really going to be? He is the one that developed most of the guys on the team now and it's not like this is a cup contending roster with Babcock.

Holland is stale too, but you can't just uproot the entire organization in one summer realistically. Like it or not, the easiest component of the bunch to change is the head coach. The Wings could maintain the status quo with Babcock or give someone else a shot. I prefer the latter given this roster is in transition regardless.

Look I'm not saying that's wrong, all I'm saying is this:

If the whole thing is about "fresh/new" whatever people want to call this ideas I think a new GM would be needed too. Just for the record I think Blashill will one day be a fine NHL coach, sure there is always the risk of becoming a another Dallas Eakins but he also could become another Jeff Cooper, Guy Bouchér .

Look at what Boston is doing, they've missed the playoffs by 2 points, fired Chiarelli because they didn't like the direction and if the new GM wants another coach Julien will be gone too. And that after having much more success than the Wings have had in the last years. So yes it's possible to change direction in one season like I said I wouldn't want Holland fired, guy has a ton of experience and is good at finding talent in the later rounds (a lot of that is also the work of mr. magic Hakan Andersson) but I would someone who isn't as attached to his own picks/players as Holland and will make moves to better the team while the 3 remaining big dogs are still somewhat capable of putting the team on their shoulders from time to time.

Sorry for bringing up Holland but I think changing the coach is not enough if this is really about a different appraoch.

Truth. The franchise is sitting in a very good position because of Holland and Babs. I just don't get the whole "needing a fresh face" when the roster has almost completely turned over in the last 3 years. It's not like it has been the same roster for 10 years. Also, after watching that TSN interview, it is sounding like he is leaning towards staying. Seems like he just wants to talk it over with family once he gets back from the World Championships.

You're the one who made the accusation.

His return coincided perfectly with your disappearance.

(insert x files music)

How do you know that isn't part of the master plan? ;)

Ha.

I was just saying I thought that, now my baseless accusation has apparently gained some interest and some damage control is needed.

Good.

If babs stays will I be upset? No ... I won't be in an uproar for him coming back ... My preference is we go a different route , preferably with jeff Blashill

My personal opinion is he's a good coach but overrated ... Those gold medals for me don't count as the teams were stacked full of all star players

From 2010-2015 we haven't done anything in the playoffs and we had hank and pav from ages 29-35? ... It's not like there career was done and over with

And as for the franchise sitting pretty I'd put that more on holland for not panicking and trading away top prospects and out scouting staff for always refilling the prospect pool with real good talent
