Babcock granted permission to talk to other teams

I really like Babcock. 10 years is enough, and he hasn't done much lately. HIs Stanley cup and Olympic gold-medals were pretty much due to the fact that he was given the keys to the fastest car each time. Substitute other coaches for him in those scenarios and they are the winners.

I don't understand why people here have such a hard time realizing this.

Because there is things called opinions. Does everyone have to agree with you?

Babs stays good for us. He leaves good for us we end up with Blashill. Let's not pretend Babs is a horrible coach and needs to go.

Prove it. You can't. Because your statement is complete supposition. And lets not forget that Dave Lewis wasn't exactly handed the bad news bears, and he did nothing. Your statement implies that coaches don't matter at all,and I wholeheartedly disagree. I'd prefer he stay but if Babs leaves so be it. Not the end of the world.

Not trying to get on you, but statements like that really bug me.

You're correct, I did forget that. Maybe he's not over-ripe enough yet, tho.

Babcock did mentor Blashill as an assistant. Seems many here forget Blashill was an assistant coach with the Wings for a year in the 11-12 season and then was...sent down...promoted? to head coach of the Griffins.

Anyone who doubts what Babs brings to the team... all Squawk Sports Radio talks about is how Quenneville is the master of matchups and OCD about it.

I will give you one guess where he learned to take it so seriously (it was in 2013). And he was schooled by the master and should have had one of the biggest disappointment playoff exits in recent times had his team not luckily come back from 3 - 1 series deficit.

I just have serious doubts that the next coach up can match the same. I know we backseat drive his game strategy all the time, but there is a reason for things he does and its not just pulling names out of a hat and it works out a lot more often than it fails. Just look again at this year... we should have easily surprised and beat the s*** out of the Blots.

People forget that babcock coached the hell out of the kids the last two years with all the injuries and we made it to the playoffs both years. I truly believe that if someone else was coaching the Wings, one of those two years we would have missed the playoffs. A great coach adapts to the talent he has. People think his methods haven't changed but I guarantee they are different this year then they were in 2008-2009 when he could coach on auto-pilot.

He is the best coaching option out there. With any other coach the Wings take a step back. Go get him Kenny!

I still get the feeling that if Kenny tells Babs that the front office are going to make a few splashes in the off season then I think he stays. With no guarantee of pulling any major signings off its still a gamble for Babs to stay or go.Unless Mrs Babs holds the aces I think Babs is gone but to where ? A couple of top signings and we become a genuine contender next year, really can see why it's a difficult decision for him to make.

All the news lately points to him staying. Which I'm fine with. But what worries me is his stated desire to switch to one year contracts. What if we lose him next season, and no longer have Blashill in the wings?

Where did this news come from? All I've heard is that babs is looking for a long term contract around 5 years.

I'm loving the Babcock hype. Give me more. At this point what the hell else do you expect from the most coveted/successful coach on the market. No media coverage? Die hard hockey fans not giving a crap? Riiiight cuz that's how the world works.

Decision by may 20th apparently. I predict he stays.

I thought for awhile he was gone but I think he is seeing that the teams that are truly interested aren't better than what he has with Detroit. If Montreal or tampa, or Chicago had openings then of course he would be gone. But messes like Philly, Toronto, and Buffalo aren't going to make him happy in the long run. I think he stays

I wish people would look at all the young guys buffalo has they aren't a mess and Pegula is their version of our Mr.I

Philly has some defensive weapons like Morin coming .. Toronto well they have Reilly, Nylander and the 4 oa other than that not a whole lot.

But let's keep in mind that the fate of some other coaches hasn't been decided yet, so if he checks the market the interest will skyrocket ..I sadly think he won't be back

Buffalo has made the playoffs 2 times in the last 8 years, in the time they have made a plethora of poor signings, they haven't developed much talent, and many people say they just got robbed in a trade with Winnipeg (I have read you ripping this trade many times Frank).

Do they have a lot of young talent....yes. Could that talent develop into something special.....of course. But I think its fair for people to call them a mess until they actually take that young talent and develop it. You cant say a franchise is turned around based on potential. At the risk of sounding like a homer, they are not the Red Wings, they don't exactly have a track record of winning.

A lot of people are ready to appoint Eichel as the savior in Buffalo, but realistically he is just one 18 year old kid. Don't forget, for every Crosby there is a Daige. Not saying he is a Daige because I dont think he is, but from Babcocks perspective, Buffalo is a risk.

"Babcock considering St. Louis and San Jose, too. Both join Buffalo and Toronto in asking @DetroitRedWings permission to speak with him."

Looks like the "May 20th" decision deadline to the media worked after all. Babs knows how to play the media well alright.

Sharks seem like an odd choice to me. I don't follow them that closely but aren't they somewhat similar to the Wings but with less potential?

A couple aging stars at the core, a couple good young guys, and an unremarkable blueline? Plus they need a goaltender. Then on top of all that add the culture of choking, the drama between Thornton and the owner, not having a captain, etc.

Even for any potential shortcomings in Detroit, I don't see how San Jose is a better choice.
