Nightfall 871 Report post Posted May 8, 2015 http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/there-is-no-presidents-trophy-curse-but-that-may-not-help-the-new-york-rangers/ In fact, Presidents’ Trophy winners have won more playoff series than expected in 41 percent of postseasons since 1986, matching expectations 23 percent of the time and falling short 36 percent of the time. Statistically, then, there’s no significant difference between how much playoff success you would expect Presidents’ Trophy winners to have based on their regular-season performance and how much they actually wound up having. In other words, there is no curse of the President’s Trophy. A very interesting article for sure. What surprised me was the Wings didn't win the Presidents trophy in 1997 or 1998 (especially 98), but they won in 2004 and 2006 and we all know how that worked out. That worked out pretty well.

rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) There was a while there back in the 90s when I was convinced that finishing 3rd was our "Stanley Cup Sweet Spot" I was the exact same way. No lie. That's certainly how things worked out in 1997. Edited May 8, 2015 by rick zombo 1 BottleOfSmoke reacted to this
GMRwings1983 8,788 Report post Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) In all fairness, in 2004 and 2006, we lost to teams that came very, very close to winning the Cup that season. So it's not like we were the only ones that got beat by that team. Same thing in 2003, although we fell just short of the Presidents' Trophy. You're not guaranteed a Cup by winning the Presidents' Trophy, but being a one seed is more likely to result in a Cup win than any other seed. Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted May 8, 2015 But no team has won the Cup the first time they won the PT. 0-15 6 of the 9 2nd-time winners did win the Cup. So far, all of the 3rd-time winners have won, though the Rangers will probably change that. None of the 4th or 5th-timers have won, but all of the 6th-timers have. Obviously something is going on.
