Dylan Larkin turning pro... will play for GR immediately

If he scores a ppg during these playoffs and has a big role in them winning the championship, what do you think his chances are of making the wings roster out of camp?

Or do you think they'll keep him in grand rapids regardless?

Given he's only 18 I have to think they're keeping him in Grand Rapids for the season regardless, barring a lot of injuries for the Wings and Larkin playing lights out.

I really want to see what Mantha can do being healthy with a full training camp under his belt.

All I saw was Mantha, despite his big frame and long reach, carrying the puck back and unprotected on a breakaway so Sanguinelli could dive and poke it away easily. No wonder the guy never gets shots off.

Going from a 35-40 game college schedule to a 75-80 game pro schedule is a huge step. Going from amatuer hockey to pro hockey is another huge step-something that AA and Mantha just reminded us. Both tore up junior last year and neither even scored 20 goals this year for GR. It takes time for guys to develop. The question is, how much? Could all 3 make it to detroit next year? yes. But I am not going to hold my breath. All should get there but all have things to do before they make it. Larkin needs to add 20 pounds of muscle. That is hard to do in one summer. Come 2016 he should be ready. Also, there is no need to rush him. We have a ton of C already: Datsyuk, Z, Sheahan, Helm, Glendening, Abby, Andersson, etc... are all natural C men. Even if Weiss is moved/cut we still have 6 on the team.

He also played in the World Juniors..World Championships and now in the AHL Playoffs

Exactly. The kid hasn't stopped playing. He will adjust to the long grind fairly quickly because of it.

Maybe, I definitely hope so. But I think it's too early to tell, even with the Worlds and AHL playoffs. The trend for new players burning out typically seems to happen around December/January, after 3 or 4 months of this kind of schedule. At the very least Larkin has been contributing, though, and that certainly bodes well for his future.

What separates Larkin from others is his excellent 2 way play. If he struggles to score, he will still contribute in other ways. Guys like Goose and Tatar turn completely invisible when they are in a drought.

I'm more excited about what he's doing at the other end of the ice than the those two goals, quite honestly. While it's nice to see him getting the puck in the net, the 1st goal was embarrassing defense (four-on-three and they let their mark into the slot without any pressure) and the second was a complete fluke. Good for him in getting the puck on net, but the goalie stops that 99/100 times.

Anyone that watched the game has to be impressed with his active stick work at the other end though. He's really got a knack for being a safe defender and doing the little things right.

This is exactly what I meant when I said earlier in the thread that I have no doubts he can be in the top 80-percentile for a bit, but what does the grind of a 60+ game season do to him at the end, particularly during grueling NHL rough games on back-to-back nights? I think he regresses to a point that he becomes a liability without a season or two in GR to build up the endurance and understanding of balance on the ice. You can go 110% for a five-game stretch in the playoffs, but what happens when you've gotta string more than a few games together? He had back-to-back games Sunday and Monday, then two full days off, Thursday and Friday in GR, Saturday off, and then last night. Five games in seven days is a lot. What's his energy level going to be over these final two games of the series? I think he'll be fine, but what happens in December when he's 30 games in against the fastest, strongest, and biggest hockey players in the world, and then he's gotta go three games in five days against the Blackhawks, Canadiens, and Penguins?

I like what I'm seeing from him, but I think at least one full year in GR is the proper way to go.

Larkin rooming w/ Hoggan. Cool.

"MAINTAINING THE ROLE

His importance hasn't changed.

"I think he has been the catalyst not only for the Griffins' success, but the acceleration of many of the young Red Wings prospects," Blashill said of Hoggan, who last weekend roomed with 18-year-old top draft pick Dylan Larkin. "He sets a daily example not necessarily with his words; those are easy but by going to work and doing it hard and successfully every single day."
