Sabres hire Dan Bylsma as head coach

Missing out on McDavid and Babcock in the same offseason is rough. Over/Under on when they fire Bylsma?

When the team gets good enough to push for the playoffs. I said in the past, Bylsma is a great coach for a young team. He came into the right situation at the right time with the Pens in 2009 IMO. He will be great for the Sabres, but I don't picture him as the guy who can put a great winning system in place.

Because the teams sure had no part in it, amirite?!

Ha

Honestly most of the time those games were like a shooting gallery.

The wings had ALOT of skill, we had a line of prime Z, Datsyuk and Hossa.

They got effin lucky, or it was alot of really good coaching and over achieving.

Dats also missed some of that series. That combined with Rafalski's body falling apart was the difference, sadly. The east was also super weak back then, so there was no stop an experienced Pens team coming out of it. Right place right time for Bylsma. They could have disguised a coat rack and made a good run that year. The key was getting rid of Therrien and his whining/throwing players under the bus shenanigans. In the long term, it was proven Bylsma was not the guy to win with. Obviously he didn't have a whole lot of help at times *cough*Fleury*cough*

Great fit for Bylsma though. Just don't see him as a long term option. He'll teach them how to play the right way, he'll teach them to be competitive. But when the time is right, I strongly believe it will be another coach to teach them how to win. Not a knock on the guy at all. I just see him as a great young team coach.

I could also argue that the Wings could disguise a coat rack in 2008 as coach, and make a good run. We certainly had no shortage of talent on that team. Canada could also disguise a coat rack as coach and win the last two Gold Medals with that roster.

That line was basically a joke but okay?

Good for him, I've always thought that Bylsma was one of the better unemployed coaches.

Now did Babcock do him a favour by raising the salary? ... I doubt he gets anything more than $2M/yr. Heard that it was for 5 years

#TSN thought he was making around 2,5 mill annually so I'm sure he will be somewhere in the 3 mill + range.

I blame Cleary for not scoring on the breakaway, Stuart for his two turnovers in game seven, and of course the blind f***s masquerading as NHL refs. But whatever, as you can tell from my comments I'm totally over it.

The Pens will reportedly get a third-round draft pick in 2016 as compensation for hiring Bylsma, who was still under contract to Pittsburgh through 2015-16.

This seems like kind of a grey area. On one hand, he's technically still "under contract" with the pens and they're still paying him.. but on the other hand, they chose to move on from him.

I don't think they should be eligible for compensation but I guess they got it on a technicality. Thoughts?

Definitely should not apply to any coach not currently serving any function for a team. What's to stop a team from hiring a guy long term just to inevitably get a draft pick out of it?

That's what I was thinking. I wish the league would step in or at least after the rule to prevent this.

Given that they're in the same division, and given all the recent hoopla, it'll be interesting to see whether Buffalo or Toronto has more success during their rebuild.

As much as I obviously want the Red Wings to bury Toronto each and every single time we play them, I'd get a lot of mileage out of watching Bylsma do the same thing as well.

Buffalo will absolutely see success sooner. Not because of who is behind the bench, but they have been stock piling good prospects for a few years now. Toronto's cupboards are basically empty.

Zadarov, Bogosian, Eichel, Reinhart and probably even more talented young guns I've forgotten. Toronto is already over the moon for that cocky Nylander kid (what has he done at the NHL level ?) the only peice they really have is Morgan Rielly. So for sure Buffalo will be better in the not so distant future their rebuild is ahead at least 2 years

And the Babcock haters will twist Buffalo's imminent success into him being a mediocre coach.

Let them twist it all they want I trust the opinion if experts, Gms in the NHL and Canada much more than them.

Babcock is up for the biggest challenge in his career and results won't be there before year 3 at the earliest .
