Hack & Whack Rule! 160 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 He had almost 1000 pts as a wing and is number 3 on all time playoff points with 163 pts (22 behind with 34 less games played) ... Think those numbers speak for themselves If he retired after 13 yrs as a redwing would you of said yes? Nope.

nyqvististhefuture 1,002 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) Don't you think if they were going to retire either of them they would have by now? Not necessarily ... I know here in montreal they retired a lot of players when they were old and in some cases sadly died (there idiots here) I gotta thinkmaybe mike illitch' is sadly still pissed he left as some wings fans appear to be ... #3 all time with 163 pts in the playoffs , 3 cups in 13 seasons 954 regular season pts in detroit , hart trophy winner and Selke , one of best all time russian players in the nhl ... If that doesn't get you in anymore I don't know what does If it's simply playing a full career with one team might as well retire holmstroms jersey since he won 4 cups Anyways maybe one day when federov will be on his deathbed as an 87 yr old man Edited June 5, 2015 by nyqvististhefuture

BottleOfSmoke 5,965 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 Federov was a hack. Fedorov, on the other hand, was one of the best two-way players to ever touch a puck, was the love of my life, and had a sick flow. He would most certainly have been in the rafters if he hadn't taken a squirty dump all over his "Detroit Legacy." Just the way things work around here. The only way I could see it happen is after Mike Ilitch passes, but it's a long shot. Osgood, while his accomplishments here were many, imo is not the caliber of player to get a banner. 1 Internet.Unknown reacted to this

The list of your hockey crushes is long and varied. Perhaps one day you should rank order them. Take heed, I'll be truly disappointed if ANY of your crushes wasn't a committed two way player. Just because you like their "flow" doesn't mean you're allowed to sacrifice defensive awareness. 1 BottleOfSmoke reacted to this

My Sergei wasn't a crush. Can't you read? He was the love of my life. The others are mere flights of fancy in comparison. But defensive awareness is a requirement for any man in my life, honestly. WingedWheel91 271 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 Neither, but Fedorov deserves a lot more votes here than Osgood. Don't forget, he won the Hart Trophy, 2 Selke's and the Ted Lindsay award. Both won 3 cups. Not to mention his superior hockey swag. White Skates ->>>> Birdcage 1 nyqvististhefuture reacted to this
LeftWinger 4,961 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 Wait, what? Sergei Fedorov was a "good" player? How jaded are these fans...without that "good" player, Detroit is still in a Stanley Cup drought...I believe that whole-heartedly...

Seraph 240 Report post Posted June 6, 2015 If there is doubt and discussion about whether a jersey should be retired, it's not going to happen. As you can see, plenty of doubt about 91 and 30 here. No one here was posting threads to discuss whether 19 or 5 would go up in the rafters. 3 Hockeymom1960, Internet.Unknown and GoWings1905 reacted to this

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted June 6, 2015 If there's a debate on whether a player's number should get retired, then there's a pretty good chance it isn't happening using the Red Wings standard. I'm perfectly with that, by the way. It's the greatest honor an organization can use to recognize legends. The Pistons retired practically everyone from the Bad Boys era, which is just stupid. I like the Wings approach of reserving it for the absolute best of the best. Wait, what? Sergei Fedorov was a "good" player? How jaded are these fans...without that "good" player, Detroit is still in a Stanley Cup drought...I believe that whole-heartedly... I tend to agree, except for maybe the 2002 team. That group was going to win it all no matter what.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted June 7, 2015 I don't think either will be retired, but I joined in on the fun and voted Ozzie. Ozzie has 400 career wins, and holds most of the major Red Wings goalie playoff records.

In most cases you could say this is accurate, but not in the case of Fedorov. Had Fedorov had a career ending injury in 2003 and not had the RFA drama, I think he there would be no debate. Based on who/what he was on the ice, he is deserving. People don't want him up there because of the other issues and the fact that he never seemed to truly respect the Wings organization. The real question becomes, what defines a jersey to be retired? Loyalty/respect to an organization? Accomplishments within an organization? True elite talent? Or all of the above? I think most Wings fans feel all of the above. Yzerman and Lidstrom fit in all three categories. Osgood fits in the first two, Fedorov in the last two. This is why I think neither will get in, and why I do think D and Z will get in. Edited June 7, 2015 by kliq

Its not so much that the fans feel that way, its moreso the categories we came up with AFTER looking at exactly who is up on those rafters. The current jerseys up there had major accomplishments, were generational, and had damn good loyalty to the organization. Adding osgood or fedorov would be stepping outside the trend the previous retired jerseys have created. Yes both feds and ozzy have certain records or accomplishments set. But each are missing something the other jerseys have, whether its long term commitment to org or winning individual trophies. The bar has been set high and allowing either of them would be undercuttng it.Z and D both are on the verge of meeting some of Wings legends categories in terms of stats but they need another cup imo. And this is all assuming that Z and D retire as Red Wings or atleast if they left it would be post contract expiration (leaving on a good note).. basicaly when both are pretty old, unlike the case for Feds; he was still pretty young when he left. Z imo really needs another cup and hes a shoe in. The captaincy status really helps. I think almost everyone on the rafter besides Sawchuck was a captain. D was and still is a generational player and already has two cups and best hands the league has seen. Def think he has a realy good chance of getting up there.
