Great news regarding most importantly Granato but also Chelios.

Never quit attitude, played as hard as he could until the age of 47. Superb d-man. 3 time Norris trophy winner.

A rock and an asset in any team.

Love It!!!

I'm assuming Granato will take over the forwards and power-play and Chelios will take over the defense and penalty-kill?

It would only make sense to have the forward take over the offense and the defenseman take over the defense... wouldn't it?...

Did I miss the part that said Granato will be back? Last I checked he turned dwon his 1 year option and was in discussions with a few other clubs.

He would be an assistant coach not a head coach. The man played a quarter of a century in the NHL. That has to count for something. Its called experience. Chelly has it. He will have the respect of the players. He will see things on the ice that Blashill will not see. I don't understand how having Chelly behind the bench is a bad thing. I think its great. Nothing is official yet so I shouldnt too excited. Lol

And you know all this because yer psychic >.>

No actually we dont know. All i do know is we have a head coach with zero NHL head coaching experience, but who i thInk will do decently well since his minors track record is good. But we have nothing on chelios as a coach, be it as an assistant.

Yes I'm psychic. So far this week I've been told I'm not the Red Wings GM, head coach and now I'm psychic. Genius stuff really. Lol. Well if you choose to be so negative then maybe you should not watch any Red Wings games. I see many angry nights in your future. Lol

That's where I went to bed. Mlive's reporter following the Red Wings tweeted that he absolutely wanted to come back. Daddy like. Check it out.

1. The 'genius stuff' is "omg Chelios?! success!!!!!!" I'm not being negative. I'm trying to make a point that we shouldn't be jumping the gun just because we hear our old fav D mans name. I love Chelios. Still do. But is it smart to wonder if he can be a good assistant? Yeah it is. What's not smart is to blindly assume this is a fairy tale.

2. Angry nights? Dam you really are psychic. Can you tell me if I will get to see my dead aunt sally this year from christmas? Oh I so hope I do.

Do you want Dave Lewis back?

I'll take Lewis over Cleary.

I hope Granato stays. He's an asset with coaching experience.

If Granato stays, I won't have a problem with Chelios being added on. But if we lose Granato without an equal or better replacement then I'm very skeptical for next year's coaching. Thank god our player leadership core is so strong that we would still be able fair well imo.

Isn't Chelios the wings strength trainer? Suddenly we have one of the most inexperienced coaching staffs in the league. The enthusiasm for this is hillarious.

Sometimes you and Kipwinger give me hope as a Red Wings fan.

I thought your aunt Sally was a Jehovah's Witness? Damn. I thought I had a career of being a psychic lined up. I better return the necklace I bought at Wal-Mart. Maybe they will hire Cleary.

Thank you for confirming your age :)

I don't know. Just spitballing here...maybe Chelios knows a thing or two about defensemen? Perhaps coaching our young dmen and showing them things and teaching them various techniques he picked up along the way of a Hall of Fame 2 and a half decade career isn't the worst thing in the world is it? I'm guessing Blash chose Chelios to be an assistant coach? I'm not psychic. Call me crazy what do I know?

So I assume no? Can't say I see the logic in bringing someone into the organization to coach who has zero coaching experience (at any level?)

No need to worry, happens all the time. What could go wrong? Oh...

Thank you. I dont know why people are getting so excited. We will officially have 2 coaches with zero NHL head coaching/assistant coaching experience. Its like we see Chelios's name and get excited without thinking abput possible consequences.

Remember when Gretzky tried to coach. Don't have your hopes up just because Chelios was a great player. He's by no means a savior.

I don't think anyone is saying he's a savior, just that its good to have a "WINNER" behind the bench. Let's me be clear, IMO - Chelios is a winner. Just my observation of being on this planet for a while, people we/I deem as "winners", usually excel at pretty much everything they choose to do. Just an example: Cheli's Chili Bar is the top grossing restaurant in downtown Detroit - FACT (I saw a Urban Development and Commerce Report last year). Go visit the other places that have been around for decades longer (e.g. Post, Detroiter, HockeyTown Cafe) then go visit Cheli's. Again, he likes to win. I just like that trait.

I do understand the concept of having a lack of NHL coaching experience in total behind the bench. It is kind of scary. But with his playing experience, there is not a doubt he understands the game. Does that translate to being a good/great coach...time will tell but I'd say the odds are in his favor.

I think it's completely on a case by case basis. Wayne Gretzky won a few things in his career but that didn't translate to coaching.

One thing you can pretty much count on if Cheli is an assistant coach though is that team fitness will probably be very high.

Hasn't Chelios been kind of a roving instructor the last few years, basically a coach that wasn't officially assigned to a team?

from the Wings' site:

"Chris Chelios enters his fifth season as advisor to hockey operations for the Detroit Red Wings. In his position, Chelios works closely with Detroit’s front office, as well as the coaching staffs of the Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins, providing insight on a wide range of on-ice issues and helping to develop and mentor young players within the organization. He also assists the team’s business operations, appearing at games and other functions to interact with fans and potential business partners."

So it may be that Blashill and Chelios have a bit of a working relationship, which would help explain this potential hiring. I have no idea how involved Chelios was though. It could have been as extensive as daily consultations with coaches and players, to as narrow as being an adviser in name only, and spending little/no actual time over in GR. I haven't the slightest clue.

I am a bit put off by how quickly this is all happening, though. Say what you want about Babcock, but he knew how to surround himself with talent. Half of his assistants went on to become head coaches. One of them won the Jack Adams. Babs was the one who brought Blashill up from college to pros. When Babs left, unfortunately so did his resources. I think a big key for how successful Blashill becomes is who he surrounds himself with, and that means learning to dig deep for that kind of talent. Announcing assistant coaches who were both already in the system within an hour of becoming head coach himself, and within a week of being bounced from the AHL playoffs doesn't exactly suggest to me that the search was extensive. Now maybe that isn't necessary. Certainly Granato has proven his mettle. Everyone already knows my opinion of Chelios as a asst coach hiring right now, but (admittedly from the outside looking in) it still all seems like a lot of preparation didn't go into these decisions.
