Gotta say I'm a bit dissapointed , thought for sure we were gonna keep one ... Probably wheaton since he missed almost all of last year and we all know defensemen take longer to develop and both were big bodies(6'3 and 6'5)

With them being gone we have 0 defensemen in our prospect pool from the last 2 drafts and our overall defensive depth doesn't look to good ... If I had to guess I'm gonna say were gonna try and trade back and if i had to guess this is the year of drafting dmen

We get 8 picks were getting 5-6 dmen for sure

Did we miss a deadline to sign them? Can they still be signed prior to the draft is what I'm asking?

Dare we draft them twice?

Umm according to that article we didn't sign them , but I don't know about a deadline ... Was gonna ask if anyone's heard of hampus melen resigning? They didn't mention him and if he's not signed he goes back to the draft as well

Not very good prospects, it's not a big loss.

Not the best but if ouellet and marchenko move up we have 6 prospects at d and one is like 5'8(hicketts) and the other is dissapointing(sproul) ... Not to mention jensen who if stays another year down will start his nhl career at 25

We need to draft mostly d's this year

I think that was the case even before these two fringe prospects were cut loose.

Take the best player available in the first round and then draft for need after that.

Pretty sure Krsmith has been preaching that all year. If this doesn't solidify that we need more Dmen in the pool, idk what does

Seeing as were stacked with good prospects upfront I'd personally trade back and then draft the best available dmen first and then maybe later on draft a few forwards and hope andersen strikes gold again

Been looking around and I Think after 30 there's some dmen that can be had with good potential

Nicolas meloche/Rasmus anderssen

Travis dermott/Brendan guhle

Gustav bourraman /Veeti vieno

Jesper lindgren /Lucas carlsson

Alexander younan/Jonas siegenthaler

Christian jaros/adam parsells

Anyways I think were all in agreement we need more d's this draft to help out in 3-4 yrs

How does this happen? They were only drafted 2 years ago. I am not up on the rules, but it seems a lot of players spend more than 2 years in the juniors and or college before they sign and they don't go back to the draft...Mike McKee was drafted the year prior, he never signed, did he go back to the draft? I know he is at Western, but I just don't get how this works.

Mike McKee went to college hockey I believe so we get to keep them longer

If no one drafts them, do they become ufa?

Umm I believe so ... That's how we got joe hicketts right?

Think if there's some prospects who dont get drafted that andersen liked or whomever we should invite them to camp and see how they do and possibly offer some contracts .... We need some good d prospects asap

College players get more time since they lose their eligibility if they sign a pro contract. I think it's two years or 30 days after their college career ends, whichever is later.

It is disappointing, both looked promising in their draft years. But I don't think it really changes anything. Especially not if we get that Reilly kid.

IIRC when you draft a player that is in Junior hockey you have to sign them shortly after they run out of junior eligability-which both of these guys have. College players and overseas players have a 4 year (college) and 3 year (overseas) window to be signed. I read the rules on this once several years and 1 cba ago..... So these could have changed.
