NBC Sports chairman wants NHL ban playoff beards

In the pantheon of bad ideas in hockey, this isn't even really all that big of a deal. This guy's job is, in part, to market the NHL. Given his relative position, he's probably good at that. So he pitched an idea that he thought would do the trick. Nobody was interested, and the idea died. No harm, no foul. It's not like he's on an anti-beard, or anti-tradition, crusade. He was thinking like a sports TV executive...which he is.

I mean, this is far less threatening than the stupid "glowing puck". That was truly a stinker of a marketing ploy.

Someone should tell this Chairman that the NHL season doesn't start in January. ;)

I don't think NBC realizes that.

Not sure it would matter.

The Stanley Cup Finals were pushed to NBCSN in favor of American Ninja Warrior on Monday. Pretty sure tonight's game is also on NBCSN.

Shows how NBC feels about hockey...

I want to find a video of the exploding players. Not finding it. In its hockey promos, Fox would show players getting hit and then disintegrating. It was hilarious.

I just spent the last hour(ish) watching videos of the Dudley Boyz giving the 3D to various opponents and imagining them exploding on impact. It's basically the same thing.

The Dudley Boyz, great tag team OR greatest tag team?

I wonder if this despite or because of such Chairman...

Pretty much. No different than how espn treated hockey.

American Ninja Warrior is basically a bunch of dweebs, who happen to work out and do stunts. It's like American Gladiators, minus the Gladiators. So you're just left with dweebs.

I'm so disappointed in you right now. I didn't expect you to like someone so gimmicky. Football pads with spikes? Might as well cheer for Demolition.

The Dudleys had personality.

I didn't say favorite. I said best.

man, and after these morons some phuck from NBC wants to ban playoff beards?

LOL. These guys aren't from American Ninja Warrior, nor do they compete on NBC.

As I am understanding it, his problem with the beards is that the players look different with them (during the playoffs, or at least the latter stages) than without them (the rest of the time).

I would guess that real men, such as Hank, who wear them year-round, are not included in his "play-off beard ban".

In the interest of creating peace and harmony between the two sides, I suggest that when players are interviewed, bearded or not, the network put the player's name at the bottom of the screen because, you know... literacy is an actual thing.

According to Puck Daddy, the guy never lobbied the league to ban beards, nor did he talk to anybody about getting players to voluntarily stop wearing them. Apparently, he was simply pointing out the fact that they'd be more marketable without them. And then a bunch of reactionaries went nuts and distorted the whole situation.

Sounds like backpedaling to me.
