Yzerman wins GM of Year (& other awards discussion)

Late 1990's to the early 2000's...Even with all that $$$, and a all-star roster the team failed to make the playoffs for 7 seasons in a row.

EDIT - I know I'm dating myself by going back to previous seasons...Just that I feel Stevie Y is by far the most deserving.

I agree. I'm mostly just being a jerk. I don't want the competition to succeed at all. Even Stevie. I just can't cheer for the GM of the team that dealt the Wings their most recent playoff loss. Same way I won't be hoping for Babcock to win the Jack Adams anytime soon.

The Rangers have had as much success as Tampa in the last three years. And Sather didn't inherit a couple of 1st and second overall superstars. If anything, he's done as much, with less.

I don't consider signing the biggest ufa's almost every year, then trade them because it ends up a bad contract being a great gm at all. You throw enough s*** at the wall, eventually something is gonna stick. What they gave up for Yandle will also come back to bite them in the ass at some point.

Anyone else notice that Canadian teams pretty much swept the awards. Hmmm..... COUGHriggedCOUGH

Karlsson winning the Norris again is kind of the death knell for that award for me. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player but even Sens fans acknowledge that he had a bad start to the year.

The award is allegedly "given to the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." By giving it to Karlsson this season in spite of his bad Sep-Dec they've removed both the "all-round" part and now the "throughout the season" portion as well.

If they were giving the award for best two-thirds of a season then it should be Giordano's. Apparently hockey writers have about as long of memory as the younger members at hfboards. If you've played well in the last month then you're the greatest of all time.

I'm so done with that award it's a joke. The job of a defender is to well...defend and not play like another forward. Yes Karlsson is elite in terms of offensive ability but as a defender he is average . Keith, Weber, Suter, Seabrook, Doughty, McDonagh, Pietrangelo

Are all better at the defensive side of the game and yet only Doughty was nominated what a joke.

Price with 4 awards is deserved this goalie had an unreal season, also the Jack Adams for Hartley is great and of course the best for the last award the captain winning GM of the year is just awesome .

As far as the community awards just like the masterton everyone is a winner there but extremely happy for Z

Still think there should be 2 awards for best D-man. Offensive (The Orr Award) and Defensive (The Lidstrom Award).

Agreed. I was going to say something like this since the Norris has basically become for the defenseman with the most points..

I like that in theory, but what I think would end up happening is we would have 2 very one dimensional winners. The offensive winner would be someone who scores a ton but could suck defensively, and the defensive winner could end up being a stay at home d-man who scores 6 points a year.

They should continue to do it the way they do it, but with more emphasis on the defensive side of things.

Maybe have an offensive one (what the Norris has become basically) and an all around one (what the Norris is supposed to be)...?

Although I do also agree with leaving it as one and putting more emphasis on defense.. ya kno, for a defenseman award :P

Aye but Lidstrom was complete defenseman not just defensive. His offense was unreal. How about the Orrstrom (lol) award (offensive) and Norris (defensive) - I still have respect for James Norris.

So, Erik karlsson.

Erik Karlsson isn't all that bad defensively. That's just the go-to pejorative amongst hockey fans. Any guy that fans (personally) don't want becomes a "defensive liability" or is just generally knocked for having enough offense, but being "bad defensively".

"Well, sure Ovie scores 50 goals, but he's not great defensively". "Yandle plays 20 minutes a night for Dave Tippett, but he's not great defensively". "Gaborik will struggle in LA because he's not great defensively".

I don't really buy it. There are very few guys in the NHL who are just completely garbage defensively. It's too important for them to be that bad at it.
