Grade the Wings 2015 Draft

Everyone has their own thoughts on what the wings needed to address in this draft so I thought it might be interesting on how each of us grade how the wing did in this draft.

I feel their top need was right handed defense men and they did end up taking two although I wish they would have gotten one of those top defense men they were gone and the kid they grab will end up being maybe a super star one day. I also question their choice of picking a goalie didn't feel that was a top need. All in all I would give the wings a solid B for this draft. Feel free to disagree with me and give your own grade.

I'd say B+

I think they legitimately got the best available talent each time they went to the podium. The Russian kid is a strong pick, and the goalie and the Marsh kid seem like steals. The Fin defenseman seems like a boom or bust pick and the other defenseman and center are probably just quality depth guys.

I don't love the third pick. That, along with the fact that we didn't have a 2nd, keeps me from giving us and A grade.

A lot of people will not like the fact that we didn't address the defense in the first round, but honestly there wasn't a defenseman available that has as much upside as the Russian. Good pick.

And re: them choosing a goalie. I do agree with it. We need someone past mrazek and while someone might emerge who's already in the pipeline, another option is a welcome addition imo. And I read somewhere that they almost took him in the third round and were shocked he was still there in the fourth so hopefully that ends up being a value pick. I can only imagine how upset people would be around here if they did that :P

I didn't like that we didn't address our biggest need, a high end, first pairing potential defenseman. However, there wasn't a single defenseman available that I would have rather taken over Svechnikov, when we were ready to go up at 19. I think he's going to be a great player and between Larkin and Svechnikov, I believe we have our one two punch of the future.

I love our first pick, not a fan of either of our picks in rounds 3 and 4, but think any of the round 5, 6 and 7 have potential to be steals. I don't think we needed to draft a goalie this year, as I believe we had more pressing needs to fill. I think there were much better players available in the 3rd round when we picked Saarijarvi. I was hoping we would pull off a trade to get a 2nd round pick or two as there were a few players I really liked.

All in all I think it was a decent draft with the picks we had. I would give it a B-...

Agree with Krsmith , could of waited a year to draft a goalie ... Wings main priority is to get some good dmen in the prospect pool since ouellet/marchenko will likely graduate and jensen/sproul will either be a wing this year or next or be elsewhere or a bust

Remove those 4 and not much to like at d right now ... We got some right handed dmen but ones 5'9 and from what I read struggled when he came down So returned back to Finland

Would of preferred trading back to get an extra pick at the time but I got no problem with the drafting of svechnikov as I see him being a big piece of the future with larkin mantha holmstrom bertuzzi

And I also think there's some potential of one of holway/marsh being a steal ... b- seems about right

yes I read the same thing there must have been a bigger need for a goalie then I thought that's why they get paid the big bucks I guess. I do here he has great potential so it's hard to knock the pick if nothing else he good be great trade bait later on if they don't need him.

that was my point also about the goalie we do have much greater need as in right handed dmen I would have been fine if every pick would have been defenseman but I do love there top pick great move

A solid B. No second rounder hurts the overall grade. yes maybe a Dman was a bigger need, but none of the guys available are better than Svech. Pearon the C is the other guy that could make it someday. He could be a bigger version of Glendening.
